hey techies out there, I've seen some websites posted around here for good deals but I'm just looking for a simple, 150-200 GB external hard drive for a low price but still a quality product. Haven't been in the market for one in a while; think I bought a seagate? or western wireless? last time a few years back...

as a retailer, I'm partial to Newegg, but I can't recommend a specific drive b/c that's not something I've been in the market for. The link above should help you out though.

I just bought an Apricorn 150 gig external HD from Newegg.com for $87.99. But with the $30 rebate it is $57.99. So far its worked perfectly.

I have never even heard of FD (Fantom Drives) and would not risk buying that unless you are not concerned about losing the data that's going to be stored on it.

Edit: I just went and read some reviews and it looks like Fantom Drives have a history of dying at the 6 month mark. Purchase with caution.

the price of memory is dropping all the time. when it comes to stuff like this, i would consider the old line "you get what you pay for".

i've used western digital and maxtor in the past. i have about 8 250GB maxtor drives that i've had since 2003. i've never had a problem with them. the last drive i bought was a western digital MyBook 500GB. i've had it for at least a year and have been happy with it (hooked up to my router and shared on the network).

try newegg.com or tigerdirect.com. fryes has some good deals as well.

I've used many no name and brand name external drives and have never had an enclosure failure. They all use the same electronics and are pretty simple devices. There is also very little differentiation between the hard drive manufacturers with regard to reliability. They're all pretty good, but no matter the manufacturer, the rule is to back up all important data period.

is it easy to hook these up? I am about to get a new computer and want to keep all of my pictures and files...is it easy to transfer that stuff over via external hard drive and then use it to move to the new computer?

Extremely easy. You essentially connect it to the computer, power it up, and then transferring files is just like moving files around on your computer.
