Best Places 2 Take Visiting NON-TEX Girlfriend...?

I need some suggestions on places to take a young lady friend from Washington (state) who has never been to Texas and will be staying with me for a week. I'm 32 she's 24, (just to fill in any grey area) and she arrives on a Saturday. Of course 6th street is already planned for that night. But as far as giving her a real taste of Austin/Texas,where are some cool spots to show her? (public places I'm talking about....pervs ). I have lived her a little over a year (and yes, I am a native Texan at least) and a single parent so I don't get to experience Austin night life or restaurants as much as I'd like. She is coming before Football season, otherwise I would have that one covered. Any suggestions for BBQ and other places that are symbolic of this great city?

Thanks for your help

There's a bar on Cat Mountain, or Mount Bonnell . . .get the AUstin guys to give you directions. Pretty cool, but a long time since I've been there. It's a dive, but pretty neat.

Also, any of the bars on Lake Travis, Oasis is cool for a sunset ( food sucks - go for drinks ), although hot this time of year, carlos and charlies if it's still there, Sam Hill is kind of fun on a weekend, especially if you're into boating.

This is not the best time of year to bring a Washingtonian to Texas. October- March would be much better.

The backseat of scally's car usually gives visitors a tingling sensation.

The Salt Lick and County Line are good suggestions for BBQ. For Mexican I'd suggest Fonda San Miguel, then take her to any of the million decent Tex-Mex places.

Also take her to lunch at Dot's. Not sexy but some good southern cooking. Or if you want someplace more stylish then you can go to Threadgill's. Food is not as good but better looking location.

Enjoy. And if all else fails just get her ****-faced drunk and lie your *** off about how good the food was, the sunset was beautiful, Sandra Bullock and the Bush sisters were doing tequila shots with y'all, blah blah blah...

hey, i can't say that things haven't been eaten in the back seat of my car. don't knock it until you've tried it.

Not knocking it, just my subtle suggestion that scally should be part of the Austin experience. You know, listed in the official Austin tour guide: tour the State Capital, visit the 6th Street Entertainment area, marvel at Scally's Burning Loins...

I would suggest a little road trip to Llano. Head out 71 and go eat at Cooper's BBQ then get a desert at the neighboring Dariy Queen. Then go 3 blocks to the river and swim by the dam, jump off the dam and hang out on the rocks. Where the water hits the rocks it is like a hydorponic massage. Bliss and just an hour away. The scenery of the drive is wonderful and it will do alot to "put her in the mood" as you drive back. If your gal is like my ex, a little favor could be in the works on the ride back. If you need directions there and to the swimming hole at the river, I can provide them to you.

Also, depending on who is playing, go to the Backyard for a show. Great venue.

Hope this helps and have fun no matter what you do (outside of the house, )

If you really want to take her to eat BBQ, take her to Lockhart and eat at Kreuz's (best-tasting brisket on the planet).

Don't take her to Sixth St. Maybe it was different back in the day, but the place is for the under 21 crowd. Since the two of you are a little older take her to the Warehouse District for some drinks and maybe a show at Alamo Drafthouse.

Cool, thanks for the advise everyone....I'd rather not take her to 6th St, but she's already heard about it and wants to check it out. She likes Baseball so Dell Diamond is planned for SUN or MON evening.

As far as back seats go...what kinda car ya got scally? My Hyundia Accent might be a little cramped

Try South Austin. It's the only real Austin left. The Techie swarm and the mayor have ruined every thing else. F**K you very much Kirk Watson!

In south Austin, try The Broken Spoke, The Continental Club, Guerro's, The Horse Shoe Lounge.
On campus, you should try The Showdown Saloon, The Hole in the Wall, and, of course, Scholtz Beer Garden.

The Dry Creek Saloon, without question. Unvarnished Austin funkiness, old jukebox, crappy furniture, cold beer, sunsets you would paint if you could.

I am sure this makes me a yuppie knucklehead, but I still love to go to El Arroyo and sit outside. It is always my first stop when I get off the plane and makes me feel Texan again.

when kirk watson runs for Attorney General, i hope John Cornyn just runs that commerical of Watson hawking light rail. he will embarrass watson.

Watson can take his monorail and suck it.

Without subjugating this thread to the West Mall, I'd say Watson has absolutely no chance and dethroning Cornyn. The odds of that happening are ridiculously low.

UNLESS people rise up against the newly voted upon districts Cornyn and the rest of the LRB drew.

In fact, it is almost funny to think of Watson giving Cornyn much more of a challenge than Steve Forbes trying to take down GWB for the GOP nod in 2000.

ANYWAY.

El Arroyo is where I always take my out of town buddies. Cute girls, good cheap food (compared to a lot of things now), and a relaxed Austin atmosphere.

I always take out of town chicks out to Lake Travis to just go swimming, or jet skiing, or other fun thing. And then eat out there at Oasis or Iguana or somewhere.

Sometimes I go to some place like Juan in the Million or otherwise a cheap place for eats. And then somewhere like Sullivans to contrast the cheapness.

Then I try to find a local comedy show or concert or even an art show.
People like those types of things, and Austin always has them going on.

I've taken people to see the bats, and they were impressed. The best way to do the bats is to park near the Capitol early, and walk down Congress Avenue (one of the coolest streets in Austin) and stop in at one of the art galleries and/or restaurants on the way down the street. Or save dinner for after the bats.

Hickory Street is good for relaxed American food.
Kyoto (Elephant Room above) is good for sushi.
Manuels is awesome for Mexican food.
China on the Avenue is good for Chinese.
And there's even just Schlotzsky's and Wendy's (or KFC, if you are into that sort of thing).

So, yeah, you walk from the Capitol down 12 blocks to the bridge, and then look at the bats.
And then you walk back and have a drink or dinner along the way.

And you can talk about how many dirty Republicans were concentrated right there 8 months ago now for election night festivities.

On your walk, you will pass the edge of "6th street." you can say, "hey, let's walk down 6th street and hit a couple bars," without making 6th street an event all of its own. It's more of a side attraction.

Sometimes it is cool just to go to the top of one of those downtown buildings and find a window. The views are pretty awesome. Girls like views.

Sorry I am so late to chime in here. If she's from Washington, she hasn't had a good margarita in a while. That's a high priority.

Ya gotta take her up 360 to Lake Austin, sit in the grass looking over at the big ridge, and up 2222 twards lake Travis, the views up there are awesome and really beautiful, she will love it, I also recomment in the evening kicking back at Sam Hill on Fri or Sat to hear the bands play and dance. and of course check that view of the sunset over lake Travis! DONT FORGET THE OASIS!!! Good luck.
