Foley's. Hart, Schaffner and Marx suit. They go on sale often (maybe 5-6 times / year). You can pick one up for about $300 when on sale.

I have a few suits from Jos. A. Banks, and I like them quite a bit. They're definitely not "top tier" (and plenty of guys around here will tell you so in no uncertain terms), but they seem very good for the money. The last suits I bought at Dillards and Foleys seem fine, too. I think you should be able to find something for $300 - $400 without a whole lot of problem.

Take a swing through Nordstrom's. You might find something on sale and they will take care of the tailoring on-the-spot...

You don't have to spend a fortune. Just enough to not have a cheap looking suit. You can get a decent suit at Jos A Bank for @ $500. More importantly is to get a good tailor.

Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale for Men starts next week (can't remember which date exactly). If you have time this weekend, browse around and ask what's being marked down. You will receive excellent service and advice--just tell them what you need. I believe Saks is also having a storewide seasonal sale right now.

Last Call is a great suggestion; you may also have luck at Off Saks Fifth (if you're willing to make the trek to San Marcos). For mid-scale dept. stores, I think Dillard's has a better selection than Foley's.

When you're buying a suit, think about its versatility too. For example, you may already have a set budget, but might spend a little more if you can get more out of your suit. Can the pants and jacket be worn separately without looking like you broke up a suit? This will stretch your wardrobe. You'd be surprised how many ways you can wear a suit jacket if it has the right cut, fabric and weight.

Three-button jacket styles are more modern without being too trendy. A lightweight wool or wool/silk blend is best for this climate. Good luck!
