blues - go to Antone's on 4th and Lavaca, "Austin's home of the Blues"
rock - radio rock, try Antone's again, for roadshows, Austin Music Hall / La Zona Rosa on 4th St. as well or Stubb's on 8th and Red River.
rock on 6th - somewhat radio friendly rock, try Red Eyed Fly (7th), Flamingo Cantina, for more punk / indie stuff try the Parish, Emo's, Room 710 (on 7th), Beerland (7th), etc.
or just walk on 6th or Red River (from 6th to 8th) and check out whatever sounds good!
