Best mp3 player?

yes, I know there are threads like this about once a week...and yes, I know I'm going to see 'iPod' listed about a 1000 times. My question centers mainly on how many players are out there now that sort the music collection on the mp3 player like a windows hierarchical (sp?) structure.

I'm looking for something around 10 GBs to give as gifts and a 30 or 40 GB for myself. I've had two different ones made by Archos that are excellent and fit perfectly for what I want, but they don't make a 10GB and I've heard their latest offering was rushed in time for Christmas and isn't as reliable as it should be. Any other brands out there beside Archos that use a heirarchical structure rather than basing what you see solely on the id3 tags?

Does anyone have any links to good websites with a lot of reviews and forums for things like this?

woo hoo im first.

ipod!

in all seriousness though, from what i hear the dell DJ isn't too bad. but i personally have an ipod. it goes well with my lacoste shirt, diesel jeans and all my other trendy items!

okay, im not that trendy.

I'm looking at the ones that you can put on your arm for when I work out and stuff. So far everyone has recommended the Rio Forge. Anyone used this one?

I got my wife a Rio for working out. I don't think it was the Forge. I thin kit was the Cali. Anyway, we like it a lot.

I'm debating myself. I can't decide between the Ipod and the Creative Zen Touch. Both are 20gb with solid state buttons. The 2 big differences are battery life (touch 24 hrs, Ipod 12 hrs) and price (Touch $210, Ipod $300). I think I'm gonna get the Ipod though. Too highly regarded.

I would want one to store maybe 50 or so songs, not a collection. I don't think they make one that would hold even a small fraction of it. So mine would be just for listening to a mix of songs and then delete them and put other ones in. An evolving process.

Also, a guy was telling me about his that has basically no moving parts and is more durable than the bigger ones. He's dropped his a couple times and no damage at all. What's up w/ this if true? His holds 256mb and that seems what I would need.

Loopy,

I got one that fit that description for my daughter last year and I am constantly having to load and unload songs for her. I hate hers. If it were mine, I might not, but I tend to use mine on weekend trips where the mood changes from old rock to jazz to beach music to whatever as the consumption of mood altering substances progresses. It's really cool to be able to shift from Head East to Coltrane and then to Lucinda Williams or whatever.

You also have to consider the fact that a 256mb is around $150 and you can get 30gb for around $200. None of them have many moving parts to speak of, but they all have the same few moving parts.

Loopy - check out the motorola m25 m25
no moving parts, built-in 256mb expandable to 1g (sd card). that caught my eye in the radioshack flyer that came in the mail today. it also has an fm tuner and claimed battery life of 18hrs.
$130 at ratshack.

Anyone have the Creative MUVO N200?

I'm thinking about the 512MB or 1gig.

Weighing in at eight tenths of an ounce and $129 or $179.

Looks sweet.

I have the Muvo TX, which has a similar form factor but only 256 MB of storage.

The size is great for exercising, and I like not having to worry about killing a hard drive. The nice thing about the TX is that it doesn't require a cable like the N200.

The biggest gripe I have about mine is something I hope they've fixed on the N200. The Muvo line doesn't seem to handle folders that well; it's happiest if you dump everything into a top level directory.

Mine will only read one folder deep and keep items in the proper order only if the track number is first. Since I organize albums by artist/album/artist - track# - title.mp3, I have to rename them to track# - title.mp3 whenever I transfer them to the player.
