Best month to lock in energy rate

My rate expires at the end of August (13.8 cents per kwh) and I'm trying to figure out whether I should do a short term lease to get me to some cheaper months or whether I should just go ahead and lock in for a year.

I've used Spark Energy the past two years, but it looks like they are not as competitive in terms of pricing at this point. Any suggestions?

That is a great question. I have not been able to discern any general rule for when rates are lowest. Powertochoose.org. is showing rates at or below .10/kwh for many parts of the state right now. Assuming you can get a rate like that, I would go ahead and do it.

No...if you are in Austin, you buy Austin.

The price of electricity in Texas is closely tied to the price of natural gas. The price of natural gas is apparently falling now (see below). So I think the end of August would be a good time to lock in a plan. Demand for gas ought to pick up once it gets colder up north.

two years ago in August, the best I could do was 12.9, and that was when it looked like prices would go sky high. I locked up a three year deal, doesn't expire until next August. Hindsight, I could have done better with a two year deal, expiring this August.

I'm not complaining too much, I just wish I could get our usage under control.
