Best Mexican restaurant?

All the Mexican restaurant threads have inspired me to see what the Hornfans collective thinks are the best ones in Austin.

For me Enchiladas Y Mas wins on food alone.

Las Manitas has good food and great atmosphere.

Can't beat the Don Juan and Juan in a Million though.

screw las manitas. i hope they bulldoze that place immediately. any place that charges for chips and hot sauce should be shut down. can you imagine going and getting chinese food and its extra for rice? **** that.

There is so much good mexican food in this city, with vastly different flavors. Gueros, Polvos, Matts, El Patio, and Ciscos are my top five. All very different.

I just started a thread on breakfast tacos cuz i just woke up and I am freaking starving. Now I want to go to ciscos and get migas.

yeah are we talking mexican or tex-mex? two very differents styles of food.

i dont really know anything about mexican food places, but my favorite tex-mex is enchiladas y mas, maudies, and juan in a million

Habanero and Enchiladas Y Mas are my favorite Tex Mex places. If you want something with more of a Mexican Flavor, I have been hitting a little place off East Seventh Street, Taqueria La Playa #2. You can get in out out of there for under six bucks and have a great meal.

I love Las Manitas for breakfast tacos and migas. To me its greatness is its morning fare. It is definitely one of the top mexican food places in Austin, or anywhere, for breakfast. For lunch it is good but not outstanding and I agree does not belong on the list.

gakpoo, how did you know i use to live in dallas? good call, maybe your onto something. of course i was 2 years old, sp I dont think I had established what good mexican food was.

i work across the street, and it is $1.75 for the chips and hot sauce. and it is not the best in town. it is not the money, it is the principle. as you can tell by the replies, alot of people do not think it is the **** as you do. enjoy it while you can, cuz someone is getting ready to bulldoze it down. coincidence?

go try polvos. and get back to us.

You just said that you read all the Mexican restaurant threads. I guess there's always room for another, but to what end? Everyone has already stated their favorites on these other threads. There is no "collective best." Tastes and opinions differ, especially on HornFans. Take it upon yourself to visit each and every place mentioned in the many other threads that discuss this topic, and consider yourself the resident expert.

I'm guessing that you must not have read THESE threads.

I took a road trip down into Mexico this past summer with my wife and in laws. I grew up in Texas so of course I grew up calling TexMex Mexican food. After, moving to Austin in the mid 90s I learned more about what Mexican food was, eating at places like Curra's. I must confess though, that by driving all the way down to Mexico City and back up you will find MANY different styles of cooking. My father-in-law loves to cook also, and we even took a cooking class from a lady in San Miguel de Allende. Was a great half day! It did give me a profound and new found enthusiasm for Mexican food. All that being said, I still like the local Taqueria here the best. For sure you can argue that they have a good number of TexMex items..... but I think that TexMex gets poo pooed as not being real Mexican. Let me say there is no 'real' Mexican food. It depends on where you are. My wife and I also did our honeymoon on the Yucatan Coast (MOST amazing place ever and I will recommend it to anyone interested in a great all inclusive resort) and the food there was also very different. I just find that a person's favourite Mexican food has to do with the styles and items they like. So it's the local Taqueria for me. I can get Steak Tampiquena with 2 enchiladas for $6.50... and I actually think it tastes better than the Tampiquena I had ad Fonda San Miguel's... no lie.... so if you guys ever find yourself in Killeen... Taqueria Mexico #2 on Business 190 is the place to be...... let 'em know I sent ya... most of the people in there know me since I eat there about 4 to 5 times a week.
