Best Laptop?

So I am deciding to purchase a laptop. I need one that can at least download music and the like. I do not need it for online games though. I want to spend anywhere from $600-$1200.

Any suggestions?

I'm a Dell homer, so take this for what it's worth. On the low side of your budget you can get a decent Inspiron that will do what you want. On the high side, you can get an XPS that will give you a little more memory, better video card, etc. Plus, I like the slot load on the XPS.

Get a MacBook. Several rebates available right now or get a student discount if you're in college. End of discussion. Best selling laptop on the market and for good reason. I have a MacBook Pro at home and a Dell Latitude at work. No comparison. If you've been a Windows user and are concerned that you'll miss it for some reason, don't worry. MacBooks run Windows, too. In fact, the fastest Windows laptop is a MacBook Pro.

He's not going to get a MacBook Pro for $600 - $1200.

I recently got a Lenovo T-61 - so far been the sweetest laptop I've ever owned or used on a regular basis including the MacBook G3 I had back in '98 but it cost around $1800. You could probably get it for around $1200 stripped down.

We went shopping for a new one for my wife a couple of weeks ago. We've kind of settled for the HP Pavilion dv9700t series. She likes having the 10 key numeric keypad. It starts at $1000. The configuration we decided on runs around $1300.

everytime this topic comes up, seems like a lot of people recommend lenovo/thinkpads. and since i'm posting this from a 2004 TP, i agree. extremely sturdy design, great performance. they'll be at the high end of your budget, but they are worth it. be happy with the computer you buy; it'll have to last you for several years.

My MacBook Pro is the best Windows machine I ever had. I need some Windows apps for work but mostly stay in OS X. VMware's Fusion product is outstanding.

Don't mean to sound like a Mac hater - in fact would love to own a MacBook Pro. But starting at ~$2k, it's on the high-end as far as price for a Windows machine

Dell XPS m1330. I'm very happy and found one brand new on ebay for about 900. Powerful too. 2gb ram, 120g hd, duo core allows for lagless multitasking. Great speakers.

Thinkpads are on sale.

1. Go here
2. Select the "customize and buy" link on the left (15" w/ integrated graphics).
3. Get these parts:
CPU: T8300
OS: whatever you want
Display panel: 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT, unless you have bad eyes and like larger resolution
RAM: 2GB (2 DIMM)
Hard drive: 100GB, 7200rpm
Optical device: whatever you want
Wireless card: Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Battery: whatever you want (9 cell is longer life...)

3. Click through... Add to cart.
4. Enter code USPSAVEMORE to get additional savings.

Should come out to a little over a G + tax. WELL worth it. No other computer competes for that price. Discussion over.

Never have bought a laptop, but have used multiple brands for work (which means unfortunately I have had no say over the make or model).

1) Think pad - it was fast, durable, and I didn't have to master 5 languages when I called tech support.

2) Dell - great if I didn't have to travel with it. Too damn lightweight to be durable. Went through multiple mother boards.

3) HP - Currently have and it is the biggest piece of crap in the history of technology and the incompetence of the design team is only trumped by the most clusterf****** customer service set up in the history of modern man.

My suggestion. BUY APPLE!!

SA,

buy a macbook. if you have an old student ID, they will give you the discount at the store. also, you will get rebates/free good printers/nano's or whatever.

you do not need a macbook pro.

Homer,

I loved the Think Pad. Only thing is I hate Microsoft products. If I could get the Think Pad without Windows and not know how to program the damn thing I would be all on board.

anotherwebexpert,

Remove windows. Run Linux.

Or, do what I do: Keep windows. Install VMWare workstation. Install Linux (and run both Windows and Linux at the same time).

I run Linux full-time on my two workstations, but need Windows for some media sites and some specific Windows-only software. VMWare is great.

or just buy a computer that already has a functional operating system.

the majority of computer users have enough trouble simply installing basic ****.

I have had two hard drives crash on my HP laptops, a hard drive crash on my HP desktop, and been through three HP combo printing/fax/copies for hardware issues.

Add in I am not sure how many hours on the phone with people who can't speak English and won't transfer me to a US help desk and I am not exactly the guy HP wants talking about their products.

Homer,

Appreciate the recommendations and I can do some things (such as swap out hard drives

), but I am among those who really shouldn't be loading an operating system and despise Windows.

I use a t-61 IBM lenovo thinkpad for work, it is a great machine, it's the OS that causes any issues, I also own a mac which is head ache free. If you are anti mac than I would recommend the lenovo.
