Best Instant Coffee?

Kind of an oxymoron, but is there any brand that is even marginally acceptable?

I remember Tasters' Choice was well thought of when it first came out, and my Mom kept a jar of Nescafe around for emergencies and for flavoring coffee ice cream, but that is as far as I go. Is there a potable instant espresso?

Coffee grounds on camping trips seem to have become an issue for Mrs Idahorn2. If a drinkable instant is available, I would give it a try.

I would go without coffee before drinking instant. You could try grinding coffee before you go and putting enough for a pot into one of those large Mr Coffee type filters, maybe even a double layer, and tying it with a string. That would give you a big teabag except with coffee. Seal your coffee bags in individual vacuum sealed bags if possible. At least in a ziplock bag with the air squeezed out. Drop it into a pot of near boiling water like a teabag and let it brew for 3-5 minutes. Move it around some to help it infuse. Pull the bag out, squeeze it to get the remaining goodness, discard it into the trash, and enjoy. Not ideal, but 1000x better than instant.

The best instant coffee is the following recipe.

you take one Tablespoon of instant coffee and simply add the following.

2 cans condensed milk
2 cans evaporated milk
3/4 cup of hershey's chocolate syrup
1 pint of whipping cream
500 ml of whiskey

Shake and drink.

This is THE way to drink instant coffee.

We got a jar of Medaglia del Oro instant espresso. It is nearly acceptable and might do in a pinch. Theu-yours reads like a milk-heavy ice cream mix with not much coffee flavor.

Idahorn2, It is a recipe for Irish Whiskey. It is actually pretty whiskey flavoured.... It is VERY rich... much richer than Bailey's. It really was a joke since it isn't instant coffee at all. Instand coffee just happens to be a very minor ingredient.

Clever Nickname,

I bring the real stuff along with a plastic coffee cone and some coffee filters. Heat my water on my stove and pour it through right into my cup.

If there's one thing I can't take while backpacking it is inferior coffee.

Not sure if you are talking backpacking or car camping. For backpacking I take the Folgers coffee in the "tea bags". There are some that make 4 cups worth or individual servings. I'm thinking of switching to a French press.

For car camping we use a percolator. It works very well and you can use filters to keep the mess down.

Get a small French Press at Target, or pick up some of the Starbucks thermal cups w/ the built-in press. Target press will probably brew more coffee and will cost less.

Nothing like a good cup of french press coffee.

Pretty familiar with the French press; we have four of them including one that is stainless and specifically for rafting trips. Rafting trips are like car camping, weight and packing size are not big factors.

The Medaglia Del Oro is not really passable. I have a jar of Yuban in my desk at work for when the dripper there is sick. I will get a small jar of Maxwell House to try that. Folgers, in any form, is out of the question. I'm not optimistic. Besides, like a lot of you, I am very partial to my press, and no less so when in the wild.
