Best Gym in Town?

I have been going to Pure Austin for a number of years but I am getting sick of it - closes too early on weekends, not enough cardio equip, often too crowded.

So I am looking for a new gym. Any recs?

I looked at Lifetime Fitness website and that looks pretty impressive.

golds and 24 hr fitness. golds has many more locations but i feel more comfortable/home at 24 hr.

if you are near a Lifetime Fitness that is an awesome place

I used to use Gold's and now I'm at 24hr Fitness and mostly workout in Hancock Center (lovely co-eds all over the place....oh, and played b-ball with Derrick Johnson yesterday and James Brown last week, pretty cool)

Gold's is too meathead for me and not as clean as 24hr in my experience. I love 24 hr. Basketball, pool, steam room, spin classes/yoga/etc, plenty of weights and treadmills. I travel a lot, so being able to workout in other cities for free is a bonus.

Lifetime Fitness hands down.

LTF=UT
Gold's=aggy
24 fitness= hmm...let's say Nebraska? Don't hate it but it's just not the best.

hancock center here as well. i broke from the normal routine of post 8 PM workout and went before the UT game yesterday.... holy hell its crowded. i like a gym to have people in it, but damn it's ridiculous from 4(?) til 8ish.

the 24 hr on william cannon feels off, cant put my finger on it. theres just something about it that turns me off.

the 24 hour in NW Austin is a **** hole comparatively. That place needs an overhaul worse than just about any large commercial gym ive ever been in.

there's a brand new one at Parmer and 35 that is really nice

NW Austin...you talking about the one near arboretum? Yeah, needs an update. Used to be the old Q. Still has the wonderful turqoise colors.

Badger - for you, just sign up at Gold's and walk on over to the one on Congress.

The new Lifetime one down South is supposed to be all green and if it's got the same stuff as the North one, then I may actually change.

I use Gold's. Cheap, and a bunch of options. I use at least 2 a week - Ben White and Bee Caves, and sometimes the Burnett or William Cannon locations.

I use Gold's for the convenience. Mostly use Tech Ridge & Lincoln Village. I'd pay the 20 bucks a month just to have a place to shower and change after running at Town Lake.

In college I did the one at 43rd/Guad. At 2pm on a Monday that place would have like 4 people in it: me, some grandma from Hyde Park, and a couple of body building queens. Cheap as dirt, smells like old socks, and basically all free weights. For cardio I just ran. Nobody went there to meet people, well, except for maybe body building gay men. In any event, most pleasant gym experience I ever had.

i go to the golds on congress and sixth and i dig it. mondays is always packed from 510 to about 7 so that sucks. but tuesday aint so bad, and from then on out, the rest of the week gets real thin, no problems in the afternoon.

on a side note, there are always hotties before 5. at least there appears to be some but they are always leaving when i get off of work. but thats the only thing about the place. it does have a very large gay population. never thought i would see so many lower back tats on guys but hey, its austin so is all good. i dont mind it but its definitely noticeable so just saying. on the plus side for me there are a ton of hotties. seriously, one day it'll be milf/hottie central and the next the complete opposite. again its cool and all, just not sure if that would sway you one way or the other. but the place is open 24 hours during the week so that rocks.

I've been going to the YMCA branch at Townlake for about 6 months. Great location, but could use some new elliptical machines. I joined after I moved back to Austin last August because they didn't make me sign a contract. However, I'm starting to look around at different gyms. UT has a deal through the Texas Exes where you can use Gregory and the Rec center. Lots of coeds to help get you get through your workout and the newest and best equipment in Austin. However, I'm 27 now and don't want to be 'that guy' that I always made fun of for still working out at the rec after graduation. I'm considering Golds, 24 hour and possibly UT.

how much is the YMCA? When I checked a few years ago it seemed expensive compared to other nicer gyms

regarding co-eds...this is one of the main reasons I love 24hr fitness at the Hancock location. I can workout without being that guy but still have ridiculous eye candy

just lost my post. short answer=It's $55 a month. However, I'm paying the poor persons rate of $27 a month. I got this deal because I had just finished law school and was (still) am unemployed. I just got a letter from the YMCA saying that I would have to reapply if I want to continue to get this rate. I'm thinking I may just join 24 hr fitness instead because $55 is too much for what I get there. Plus, my fiance and her roommate work out at 24hr.

granted I paid 3 years in advance, but my monthly rate at 24Hr is $18. Next year, which will be my fourth, it goes to $8

you can't beat that

$55 for the ******* Y is a ripoff

I am paying $20 per month at Gold's (roommate was already a member - they had some same household special) - no contract, no processing fees, etc. I am definitely getting my money's worth.

For those of you that work out at 24 hr or Golds, do you mind if I ask what kind of a deal they gave you? I will be joining one of the two by the end of the month. Feel free to either post or pm me. Thanks!

I would definitely ask what kind of discounts they give to your company. I used to work for UT so they gave me a state employees rate for 20/month. Workin for a big company could definitely lower your costs. They have a huge lists of companies that they have partnered up with.

i pay about 25 or so a month, but i wouldnt pay more. i do get the company discount but if it was higher i would definitely not join. in nyc it was like 60 a month with fresh towels and deoderant/hair gel/etc. i wouldnt mind paying that but golds is really basic, really basic. the machines could be better, the ladies hotter, but really i go there cause its 4 blocks from my job and only 25 a month...

golds downtown. i'm sure tech ridge has some hotties but no point driving out to round rock to get some exercise. and when i went to tech ridge on the weekends, the ladies were lacking. but still during the week, downtown, they can be pretty good.

I only pay 14.00/month at Gold's Gym plus free parking at Littlefield parking garage downtown. Can't beat that. But then again, I was a member when it was World's Gym and Gold's took over. It is convenient and they have several locations in Austin. Plus I get to use Gold's Gym (free) throughout US when I travel.

I workout at Gold's for $35/month. Not bad, but ****, it sounds like I'm getting face raped compared to what some of y'all are paying there.

Anyway, it's a gym. It's right near my apartment. I wanted to join that new Lifetime. I even went and workout out there with one of their one time passes. It's really nice. But, I couldn't justify paying $200 upfront, plus $10 more per month.

It's not like the weights weigh more at Lifetime.
