Best golf tournament ever?

There are several factors that have made this tournament so good. First and foremost, it has been, pardon the pun.........a masterstroke by the USGA.........to pair the marquee matchup together for the first 2 days.

Secondly, Torrey Pines is a ridiculously gorgeous location. The fact that it is in SoCal and West coast time is a huge plus as well........Because they provided wire to wire coverage with the marquee names hammering it out in prime time. (HuGE)

Finally, the level of play has just been outstanding. Tiger has elevated this sport a couple of notches with his theatrics, clutch shots, and the ridiculously overplayed "injury" angle.

You have a perennial crowd favorite in Rocco Mediate, whom everybody loves, battling against the player who may be the greatest competitor in his/her given sport...........on a course he has dominated........with perfect weather........you just can't draw it up any better.

Maybe not the best tournament ever, but the best final round ever has to be Watson over Nicklaus by a hair at Turnberry in '77..."The Duel in the Sun"

I haven't been following golf religiously for long so I'm not as educated as most, but for me it is the most fun I've had watching a tourney. Tiger amazes once again against a very likable and humble competitor. Can't wait to tune in tomorrow.

the 97 Masters was the beginning of the new era. Tiger leads the 2nd and 3rd rounds and wins by 12 over Tom Kite- at the time the leading career money winner.

I am no historian as well but I would so far put this up there with Tiger's most dramatic major's. I think he needs to close it out on Monday for this one to move up on the list though b/c history will not know who Rocco Mediate is.

I am trying real hard to remember years but I think 00 PGA with Bob May and that duel down the stretch that eventually led to a playoff with dramatic putts all the way to the end. One of Tiger's best.

Also 99 PGA?...with Sergio Garcia making a big rally down the stretch (including that great shot behind a tree) but falling just short with Tiger draining some key putts.

Masters from a couple years ago (05 I believe) when Tiger made that amazing chip on I think 15 or 16 where it landed at the top of the green, caught the slope, rolled all the way down to the hole in dramatic fashion, then in even more dramatic fashion lays on the lip of the cup, then as Tiger stops his celebration it just falls in and the crowd goes crazy as does Tiger, Steve, and 2 drunks guys behind them. Tiger goes on to win in a playoff with Dimarco.

The heart he showed in these tournaments, 99 PGA, 00 PGA, 05 Masters, and 08 US Open is just amazing. All have been competitive hard fought tournaments with amazing shots and drama from both Tiger and his competitors. If I had to rank them it would be:
00 PGA
08 US Open
05 Masters
99 PGA

Great tourney. I've always enjoyed watching Tiger win more than any other dominant athlete/team I can think of, but this is one time I wish he'd finish second. Rocco seems like a really cool guy and I'd like to see him win a major. This is probably his last chance.

The '00 PGA was probably the most exciting tournament I've ever seen.

Tiger's chip-in on 16 at the Masters in 2005 is probably the best shot I've ever seen.

This tournament is up there. Wish I could be home right now.

Tiger's shot out of the fairway bunker on 15 was incredible. I thought it was going to turn the tide in his favor but Rocco answered right back with a distant bird.

What a tournament.

Poor Rocco. He's held tough and done his best to win it. On a day when Tiger isn't hurting, he wouldn't stand a chance.

As it is, if he can end it on a hole that isn't a par 5 it would help. His lack of length has hurt him both yesterday and today. I'm pulling for him. He's the underdog and I have an affinity for guys that don't hit it a mile, but grind it out. That's my type of game, so I tend to pull for them.

Hook 'em

Very memorable alright, although I only got to see the last two holes today. Good argument for being the best.

as spectacular as tiger looked on some shots and puts, he looked equally awful with his driver. tiger being tiger won him this tourney. he couldn't find a fairway to save his life. and then he'd pull off some miracle approach shot.

rocky wasn't grinding today. tiger was. and the amazing this is that he still won.

and save for a few shots, i don't think his knee bothered him that much. i think he was playing it up a bit.

congrats to tiger. i was worried if he let this one slip, people would be talking about unlucky 13 and how he'd be stuck on it.

Unbelievable. You have to give Mediate credit coming from 3 down on the back 9 to take a 1 stroke lead but just not able to hold on against Tiger. Tiger found away to compete like he always does. He had 2 of his 4 phases going most of the tournament and had his drives straight and putts falling at times when he needed them to.

17th amateur and professional major...3 behind Jack.
14th professional major...4 behind Jack.
65th PGA tour win...8 behind Jack and 17th behind Snead.
29.41% career win% on tour
39.82% 1st place or 2nd place on tour

He has won 27% of the majors he has entered and finished 2nd in 5 more times for a total of 19 top 2. Still way behind Jack in that stat but amazing thing is that he has won 6 majors in his last 14 tries and 1st or 2nd place in 9 of his last 14 majors (65%). He is on quite a roll right now.

His knee was affecting his game and I don't think he was playing anything up. I do think many have been making more of it right now though. Maybe it will linger. But let's wait and see.

Rocco's three consecutive birdies to take the lead was legendary. ESPECIALLY at the US Open. However, you knew he had to birdie 18 because that almost a forgone conclusion for Tiger. I wish one would have had to make birdie to win but it ended. Unbelievable and a blast to watch.

I will say this, if I had to make either one of those putts on 18 I would miss 99% of the time. I was extremely nervous and I wasn't even there.

I think that Tiger's knee was def. hurting and he was not playing it up. If anything, he downplayed it by never mentioning it and avoiding questions before the tourney over it. He did not take pain killers the first two days. He did the third during the round and all day the fourth. I assume he took a good dose today as well. So that was a risk too as he may not know how he would react muscle response wise to the pain med's.

Gutty play by both. I hope that Rocco stays around awhile in the final pairings of tournaments coming up. I hope he ends his career on a very positive successful note.
