When the play is over after the whistle, "they blew him dead".

or

When they need to take their last timeout late in the game, "they need to burn one here"

Or am I missing one or two?

I once heard John Madden say..." If the Broncos are planning on winning this game......thay are simply going to have to put more points on the board".............BRILLIANT!

Why are they called commentators? Aren't they "commenting" on the game? Shouldn't they be called "commentors" ????

They are giving a commentary.

Commentors give comments, while commentators give a commentary.

I think a commentary is a series of explanatory comments about related subjects or about an entire event having many phases or parts.

Calling them commentators possibly indicates they know enough of what they are talking about to freely expound on all aspects, big, small and interrelated, of a subject or event as an expert authority.

And, perhaps, a commentor is simply anyone who has any comment of whatever value, which might indicate having a lesser knowledge, authority or commitment.

Not much real difference there, is there?

Now, if there are two individual, simple commentors commenting jointly on an event, their combined comments might well merge and develop into a more full commentary and suddenly they, or others listening, might feel those simple commentors have thus elevated themselves to commentators.

So it can be tricky and this entire commentor/commentator appellation thing must certainly be ripe to be rife with blatant abuse, grandiose posturing and self aggrandizement and, yes, even self doubt for those commentators who still retain a bit of conscience, remembering from whence they came.

If you or others think enough of your comments, you probably can very easily claim to be a commentator.

You might even believe it.

For myself, however, I'll take what I believe is a higher, though less exalted, stance.

I really feel that, so far, I've only been commenting.

But if I keep on any longer, any longer at all, I should probably be quickly and properly accused of gross commentating and doing that commentation without my having the requisite, proven, certified commentative expertise to rightly commentate as an actual commentator.

And that's truly not my intent, so I'll stop my commenting right here and now and comment no further.

Your comments are, of course, welcome.

"Hope there's not a head in that helmet!"

It is a rule taught in broadcasting school that this joke must be made every time a football helmet is dislodged and rolls on the ground.

"Explode into the secondary." An oldie but a goodie.

edited to add: Haven't heard this one much since Earl Campbell retired.
