Best first and second rounds of the tourney EVER?

hard to say it was one of the best ever when your team gift wraped their only game and gave it to their opponent.

They set the matchups right, that is for sure. In hindsight you could easily make the case that some of these teams weren't seeded very well though. Northern Iowa for instance could have been a higher seed.

There have been a bunch of close games and that has made it the most entertaining to watch.

For me, it was. Close games, and outstanding quality of play.

A season or so back rivals it for the 12-5 type upsets, but this year stands out for me not just in the double-digit seed upsets but, even more, the quality of play.

And here's Cornell playing 8 seniors!! EIGHT!! They're putting on a clinic. Their opening regional game with Kentucky is must-watch.

The 3-pointer hit by the 6-ft Northern Iowa guard -- given the layout on the court, the shot clock, the score, the circumstances -- that is now, for me, the coolest basket in the history of the game. Instead of tussling the final 35 seconds for the win, he just flat out went for it when he had an open shot. Screw the clock, the odds, screw it all. Just go for it. Nails!!

Baylor and Kansas State in the Sweet 16. They earned it.

Cornell, St. Mary's, Northern Iowa all play tremendous basketball. It's fun watching teams that can shoot the lights out, and play as cohesively as these teams do. It's truly a situation where the total is greater than the sum of it's parts. It's what basketball is supposed to look like.

Omar Samhan's post moves are a thing of beauty. He is not the fastest or most athletic center, but he plays under control and knows the game. He can score turning to either shoulder, and the understanding of the pick and roll game is incredible. I don't see how anyone could not enjoy watching these guys, and these teams, play such fundamentally sounds basketball. And in the process beating more athleticaly talented big schools.
