Best Coen Brothers Movie

Bought the Coen Brothers Box Set over the holidays (Fargo, Raising Arizona, Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink - a steal for under $40). Have these guys ever made a bad movie?

So, which of their movies is the best? For me it's O Brother, Where Art Thou.

My favorite is Raising Arizona but it may not be their best.
I have enjoyed them all and some of them even get better with multiple viewings.

The Lady Killers (which is a re-make) might be their weakest film but I still enjoyed it.
Irma P. Hall who plays the lady that owns the house is a very close friend of my brother and I have met her several times. She is great in it and she also starred in Soul Food, both the movie and the HBO series.
She is a sweetheart too.

My favorite is Raising Arizona. Also not saying it's their best, just that I like it best. I prefer comedies to dramas, though. I also really like Miller's Crossing and Lebowski.

Fargo. Same movie as No Country in terms of the broad questions of fate, chance, morality, etc...., but much more stylish and complete, with great character development and pacing, Love Hudsucker Proxy as well.

Fargo would be my choice but that's probably due in part because I lived the first 14 years of my life outside of the Twin Cities. The small details & mannerisms that they nailed in that film are just awesome.

No Country could end up being my choice a few years down the road, though. And I wish that Barton Fink would get a little more love.

Haven't seen NCFOM (I know, I know) but have seen everything else. Will join the chorus:

Raising Arizona is my favorite. Fargo is probably the best.

My ranking:

1. Blood Simple (1984)
2. Raising Arizona (1987)
3. No Country for Old Men (2007)
4. Fargo (1996)
5. The Big Lebowski (1998)
6. Miller's Crossing (1990)
7. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
8. The Ladykillers (2004)
9. Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
10.The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
11.The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
12.Barton Fink (1991)

How can anyone not say The Big Lebowski. It is hands down their best. They are all very good but The Big Lebowski is one of the the greatest comedies of all time. You are all out of your element.

Sorry that came of a little preachy. It is my favorite and I didn't mean to sound like I was saying everyone else's was a bad choice.

1. Fargo
2. O Brother Where Art Thou?
3. The Big Leboswki

4. Raising Arizona
5. No Country for Old Men

6. Blood Simple
7. Miller's Crossing
8. The Hudsucker Proxy
9. Barton Fink

Everyone says O' Brother Where art Thou? but I didn't think it was very good. It just was not as funny as most Coen brothers movies.

The Big Lebowski is either a movie you love and become part of the cult or a movie that makes wonder why people like it so much.

how good of a filmmaker are you when the general consensus is that Miller's Crossing isn't even in the top 5 films you've made. That's incredible.

I still haven't seen the new movie yet, but I would rank them:

1. (tie) Raising Arizona
1. (tie) The Big Lebowski
2. Fargo
3. Miller's Crossing
4. Hudsucker Proxy

By the way, I don't see The Big Lebowski as simply a crude comedy. There is an undercurrent of meaning there. The icon of the Old West was the cowboy. Therefore, only the cowboy himself can crown the new icon of the American West. And so on.
