Best Chicken Fried Steak?

I have some out of town friends who want to try the best chicken fried steak in Austin. Any suggestions on where to take them?

Beg to differ with the Hoover's reference. Hoover's is good, certainly better than Threadgill's (which has managed to go pretty much into the shitter in the last couple of years).

The BEST CFS in and around Austin? I hunted. I searched. I inquired. I found it.

Cafe 290, in Manor. Take 290 out east from I-35, drive about 10 minutes, it's on your right in Manor. Order the single -- the double is more than I could eat (except for when I was say, 15). Crispy fresh breading. Tender meat. Good gravy, good veggies. Only criticism -- a little too much breading on the edges, but that's no problem -- if you don't want it, just trim it off. I'd rather have too much than too little.

Also, it's a real deal country diner type place -- folks in feed store hats, the whole show.

Caveat -- I have never had the CFS at the Broken Spoke, and I hear it's pretty damn good. Can anyone comment?

I too vote to Hoover's. Cafe 290 is a close 2nd, and so is (was) The Broken Spoke, of all places.

HOwever, Hoovers can give you the whole package, from the corn bread to the grits to the collared greens, to the fries...

mmmmmmmmm.

I grew up going to Cafe 290....totally forgot about that place. Sounds like we need to try Hoovers too. Thanks for the help!

By the way, if you want some good chicken fried steak in a real country cafe outside of Austin, try these places:

Wagon Wheel in Lexington
Dale's Essenhaus in Walburg

Hearing about the Black Eyed Pea makes me want to vomit in the face of capitalist chain restaurantism.
