I am a big fan of carne guisada. Personally, I think that you can judge a real Tex-Mex place by it's carne guisada or chile relleno. I am a big fan of the carne guisada at Nuevo Leon. Trying to get some more opinions on the best carne guisada in Austin.

Unpainted, is their version in tacos or served as a stew?

I had the carne guisada at Tomatillos in SA recently and really liked it.

Taqueria Abborrotes (sp?) on Tillery Street in east Austin across the street from the catholic church.

Riverside to Pleasant Valley to First St to Tillery...a few miles down on the right.

awesome carne guisada. i measure all others against it.

I had to check with my buddy who still lives there, but my very first carne guisada was Taco Shack's version. There were stands at Congress around 1st and Guad. around 29th or so as I recall. This was like 1980. A couple of carne guisada tacos with jalapenos and onions would set you back about $1.49. Still my standard for the dish.

...just as OU is the standard for sucking.

seriously, you need to go to Porfirios on Holly street. I have not had any Carne Guisada better than them. I have had most of the tacos from the places already mentioned. Now, Taco Shack is pretty good, but Porfirios is better IMO.
If you try it, send me a message and let me know.
