it would be hard to come to work everyday knowing that no matter how well you do or how hard you bust your ***, your company is going to fail. And it's going to fail the next time and the next time. I would start looking for another job.
Yes, about a year ago, in fact. He said he thought his retirement from baseball would dovetail with Augie's retirement from coaching and said that he asked his agent to speak with DeLoss Dodds about the possibility of him replacing Augie. I'm sure he was promptly told "Never going to happen."
He was so rude about UT baseball on the radio a couple of years ago. He didn't get an offer to play here did he? Wouldn't want him here after hearing his interview....
You're right, he didn't get a scholarship offer from UT. His dad played here, and he grew up a UT fan, so I think this is where he really wanted to play college ball. But Rice was the only school that offered him a scholarship, as far as I know.
I think Lance has the personality to be a good recruiter and a popular coach, but there are 3 things working against him.
1. The comments he's made about UT in the past are not very becoming of someone who claims he wants to coach at UT. He's foolish if he thinks DeLoss doesn't know or that he doesn't care.
2. He doesn't have a college degree, and that alone is enough to disqualify him for a head coaching position at the University of Texas.
3. He has no experience as a coach. This is not some low-rent baseball program looking for a publicity stunt. Texas hires proven, successful head coaches. We do not hire washed up major leaguers looking for a hobby.
If it ever happens, it will be way, way down the road ... after Lance finishes college, finds a coaching gig somewhere else, wins a lot of games, and gets a ring or three.
Good post bassale. I guess if the guy did what is necessary to qualify for the job, I might change my mind - but I don't think I would ever want to see him running our program.
Beside all off his shortcomings, Augie is still doing an excellent job.
If the Astros are smart they will trade Oswalt, Berkman and Lee and try and get something for them. The Astros are looking at 100 losses this year and it won't get any better any time soon.
Is he smoking crack wanting to be the coach @ UT? When Augie steps down, the search for a new coach will be limited to the cream of the college baseball world, much like when Coach Gus left.
