Berkeley City Council

Good for the people of Berkeley. I helped remove the U.S. armed forces recruiters from the Cal campus plaza in 1984. In a non-violent way. Last I checked, they haven't returned. What a great city; I would welcome living there again someday. They have fine values and the students at Cal remain among the most liberal in the country. Fortunately, there are groups (there are by my count six, such as CAMEO, UTPCR, etc) working at UT in a like manner. Austin and Berkeley. Gardens of Eden.

Here's what the Marines can put in the parking space for the rest of the month.

Why do you care what the Berkeley City Council does in their own city?
And I wonder if Gordon is related to Steve...

AustinTexan, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. They have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Code Pink, CAMEO and many other un-bathed and unshaven organizations who rise and sleep under the blanket of the freedom our military provides. You curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what they know. The Marines existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

So instead of participating in a useless exercise to silence their efforts to find more guards for the wall, you ought to just say thank you and step side when you encounter a man in uniform walking down the street.

Yeah man, I'll smoke my weed in front of Berkley while we don't need no more of the Man, man. If we just dissolve our military, the world will likewise put down their arms and all the militant religious tyrants and terrorist will join hands as we sing Peter, Paul and Mary songs and make sweet free love.

Japan and Germany trying to take over the free world was just a reponse to our capitalistic greedy ways.

to the marines bombing the hell out of that city. shock and awe them.. they're not our own.

"This is very serious," Rachel said. "This isn't a game; it's mass murder. There's a sickness of silence of people not speaking out against the war. We have to do this."

If you want to protest the war then fine go protest the war but I don't honestly see Harassing a marine recruiting office as a means to protesting the war..... To me, this just shows how out of touch with reality the people in that area, and in many cases that entire state, really are. Not sure what utopia they think we’re living in.

IMO folks that are involved with organizations like Code Pink are recipients of freedom from the blood of others...They sure do like to "use" their freedom but dang sure don't want to have to sacrifice anything for it.

I'll never forget walking down Telegraph one afternoon when I came across a crowd gathered on the sidewalk. As I got closer, I could see that there was a guy painting two naked women with bright colors. They were all grooving to the moment. No police in sight.

Berkeley is a different place.

pmg,

I think supporting the armed services is similar to paying taxes. I also don't think a community should be permitted to opt out of paying income taxes.

Part of what those Marines fight for is the right for that city to decide what happens in their city.

Like flag burning, and letting the KKK have rallies, I don't agree with the decision, but I support their right to make it.

I gotta think this is a money saver for the Marines anyway. How many kids are you recruiting out of Berkeley vs what it cost to keep that location running? Lock the doors and don't look back.

Military recruiters are about the biggest douchebags around. I had one actually threaten me when I decided not to join the army after I took the ASVAB. If I had a son, I wouldn't care if he joined the military, but I'd never let him near a recruiter.

They make up absolute ******** to get people to sign. They should just be offering (legitimate) info, answering questions, and allowing people to make decisions at their own pace. Instead, they make car salesman seem like easy going low pressure guys.

Berkeley has a problem with don't ask, don't tell. I also have a problem with it. Its 2008, its long past time to let people who are openly gay join the military. If the military violates local employment laws, then they should face all the penalties that a private employer in the same locale would. I couldn't go there and recruit men for an offshore oil rig and say I'm not gonna hire any gays. The military and any Federal government department shouldn't be able to do so either.

Aren't all you Republicans for states' rights and for local control? If so, you've got to back Berkeley on this.

i agree with getting rid of the 'don't ask, don't tell" policy, but berkeley is still a piece of **** town with piece of **** people. you don't ... i'm sorry, you just don't tell the military they're not welcome to recruit Americans from a city in THEIR country because you're some hippy pacifist.

i would be curious how many recruits that office does get. it would seem most everyone in the area has no interest in joining the military. what good is that office?

but consider this a plus for that office. i'd expect people from outside of berkeley who were going to join the marines to go specifically to that office just to rub it into the city's face and give them the finger.

I have a problem with the way my tax dollars are being spent. Does that mean I shouldn't have to pay taxes?

The Constitution seems to me to be clear on how states' rights work. They don't give a state the right to opt out of national obligations. National obligations are spelled out and armed services (and taxes) are on the list.

Macanudo,

All other government offices abide by the employment laws of their locality, although I'm not certain whether they HAVE to or not. There's not any other department that has a don't ask, don't tell policy. Not even law enforcement depts like the FBI and certainly not red tape depts like the SSA.

The notion that "don't ask don't tell" is the only reason Berkeley and Code Pink are doing this is a crock of ****. It goes way beyond that.

The radicals in Berkely local govt are blatantly anti-military. CP routinely harrasses our armed services with chants of "mass murderers" at their protests.

Yes, they have the right to say those things -- but they should remember who protects that right.
