Beltre and Rangers Close

While I'd love to have Beltre, I think this is a crappy thing to do to someone who's done everything the organization has asked him to do.

Sentimentality is something the Yankees can afford because they have the money to sign two or three all stars in every free agent crop. Young is a great bat we'd love to keep in the lineup, but to pitch decently in Arlington you need great range and arm strenght on the left side of the infield. As well as Young plays he'll get a lot of ABs. He's been a professional and a hero who hasn't let his ego go to his head. He will be a very well paid utility infielder.

^Texanne has a very valid point. MY has done everything the Rangers have asked him to do, and by all reports has been the clubhouse leader of the team. The other side of the coin is that he is 35 and makes a lot of money. If you look at the current infield - Moreland, Kinsler, Andrus, and Young - Michael is clearly the weak link in the defense. No doubt Beltre would be a defensive upgrade if he plays to his potential. And at $16M, Michael is too expensive to keep around as a super-utility IF/DH - and Mitch Morelnad looks like he's ready to be the long-term answer at 1B (and five years away from Free Agency).

If they make this move for Beltre, the only fair thing for MY would be to trade him to a team that would play him every day in the infield - even if the Rangers have to subsidize part of his salary.

Trade MY if he asks for it but otherwise, this is a team game and pitching and defense win championships. See our own Longhorn baseball team for proof and San Fran just last season over our very own Rangers. San Fran was clearly a superior defensive ballclub and there weren't many bats in their lineup I'd be willing to trade for one of our own (Rangers team).

No doubt MY will have issues not being our 3B next season but I don't get caught up in the sentimental side of the game. He's no longer the 'face' of the franchise and he gets paid more than enough money. I'm not interested in what MY wants...I'm interested in seeing the Rangers compete and that's what Beltre gives you at 3B.

Sorry Texanne

Young should do everything he can to improve his team. Just because he's done "everything the team has asked him to do" doesn't mean it's not a business.

Heck, they'll probably be willing to pay him $16MM this year to basically be a nonfactor, which would be incredibly generous.

I'll be the first to admit that he's a great guy. But if anyone watched how his defense had been going by August, you'd consider $16MM not so great.

Since Young has the power and average to be a good DH, we can afford to keep him. If he was available last year imagine how much better off the Rangers would have been when we had Kinsler out and when there were non-performance issues at first base. The kind of depth Young can provide will be enormously valuable.

Michael Young - the #1 team player in the history of the Rangers and one of the most "accomodating" superstars in baseball - will do whatever the team needs him to do to succeed....as he always has.
