Belize?

Any of you all been to Belize? Placencia or Ambergris Caye? Any accommodation recommendations? What about activities? How do the ruins compare to the Yucatan and rainforest/wildlife compare to Costa Rica (Manuel Antonio for example)?

The Ruins are much less excavated in Belize than in the Yucatan. They literally appear like they just emerged from the jungle. No gift shops, fewer tourists. I suggest that you take a river tour from Belize City up the Belize River to the ruins at Altun Ha. I did it. It was impressive. Watching the wildlife from the boat was cool...

Ambergris Caye is a dump. I've heard good things about Placencia. Bring lots of 100% DEET. Sand fleas are deflected by nothing else.

i went to placencia in 02, a year after they got hit by a hurricane. it was just me and another guy. believe it was september. we were the only visitors there.

i don't remember the place we stayed, but it was pretty cool. there are newer places i've seen online. Francis Coppola or his daughter was building some resort there.

it was a great place, even though we were the token visitors. locals were all really nice. after 8 days, i think they all knew us very well. can't really speak for it now, as it's been almost 7 yrs, but if things haven't changed, i would definitely go back.

Amergris Caye was great to me. No huge hotels or development. The "downtown" had character and I even stayed in one of the "dumps" for a night before getting a nice cabana house a little farther down the beach. Not a ton of nightlife but they had a Fado although it's not like the ones here.

Awesome beach, clear water and great diving if you're into that. Rented a golf cart for the week and that was fun too.
