Belichick

The Patriots, already out of playoff contention, are getting mauled by the Bills tonight. Belichick throws the red flag to challenge the ruling that a Bills receiver caught a pass at the sideline. He loses the challenge. Afterwards, the TV cameras catch him yelling on the sideline phone to the guys in the booth who advised him to challenge. When he finishes, he throws the phone as hard as he can toward its cradle and storms off in disgust still muttering to himself. Never seen him lose his cool like that. I'd be surprised if the phone survived that throw. (Bills lead 38-9 very early in the fourth quarter)

I totally disagree that Brady made Belichick. You guys are overreacting to the Pats current season and situation. There is alot more going on there than just Brady leaving.
I love Brady....but he owes Belichick, too.

Ok ok...IDE disliked my post, so I'll bend.... a little....
It was probably my first line in my post could have been better stated...
Of course, Brady certainly helped make Belichick..no doubt..but he knows a thing or two about coaching...and more importantly managing.....a team. Belichick did plenty to help make Brady, too IMO.
Brady deserves likely the largest portion of credit.
I was just pushing back against what I perceive as hyperbole here on the subject.

Belichick is a good coach. Brady took less money for years to help get better talent on the team and was/is a "coach on the field" (I hate that term).

Together they were a great combination but Brady is the more important component. Does anyone else think Belichick's son resembles Joe Dirt?

Brady called all the plays? He drafted all the players? He designed the schemes? He signed the free agents? He put players in the best position to succeed?

This isn't a great Pat's team but to argue the last 20 years of success is MOSTLY due to Brady? Sorry. Who gave Brady his weapons? Who kicked the game winning field goals?

Brady on the Browns would have retired 10 years ago with 5 concussions.

The 2018 Super Bowl and the 2019 season success were almost entirely on the defense already. They were going to fall flat this year regardless because the defense was likely to regress to the mean anyway, and that was before accounting for all the key guys they lost. They wouldn't suck this much with Brady, but we're talking like 9-7 instead of 6-10, still not a playoff team. He was smart to get out when he saw the writing on the wall.

The question was really always "Could a reliable game manager win with those really good Patriots teams?" and "Wouldn't another elite QB have won just as much if he were there instead?" never "Could a washed-up has-been who currently isn't even one of the NFL's 50 best throwers do just as well?"

Who was the QB that went 11-5 or 10-6 the year Brady was injured? I guess Brady won those games too.

Not a Belichick fan. The dude is self absorbed to the max from what I can tell. Probably a very good defensive mind but without Brady, he might be upper echelon but not elite.

I think Brady would have won several Super Bowls with many teams in his prime. Plus, there are two they should have lost if not for poor coaching on the other side.

Seattle, the INT. - While I really like Carroll, the play call in SB XLIX at the goal line was one of the worst ever. Calling a pass over the crowded middle from the one, with the best short yardage back in the game in your backfield, was inexcusable. It was a gift.

Atlanta - SB LI - While Brady’s comeback was epic (I fully concede), Atlanta’s meltdown was one for the history books. Poor play-calling, no poise, etc. It was embarrassing. But yes, Brady was fantastic.

GOTT: greatest of their time. Unitas and Montana and Brady all had great coaching and teams

they would have been successful anywhere except Cleveland and Houston

I hate Belichick too, neither would have won as many SBs w/o the other, and I've said for many many years, that I believe Belichick, was the reason the Giants won Parcells two SBs.

Biggest decline in any single offensive or defensive unit in the NFL from 2019 to 2020 was the Patriots defense. Partially due to the lack of offensive support, no doubt, and also certainly due to expected regression - there was just almost no way they were going to be able to match their superlative over-their-heads performance of last season.

True, but those usually aren't picked off. That was a Belichick deal - he had specifically had the scout team run that play in practice and Malcolm Butler realized what was coming when he saw the formation. Otherwise it's unlikely that he jumps the route decisively enough beat the WR to the spot and intercept it, even if he still has the instincts to knock the receiver loose from the ball. That's a mark of great coaching.

Atlanta really did melt down there. And the OT coin-flip going in their favor was huge (although maybe the defense steps up anyway). Brady was a big part of the reason they were down 28-3 in the first place, but then he was nearly perfect after that point.
