Beer sales at DKR

I saw on another post that they are now selling beer at DKR Memorial Stadium.

Is that correct and if so is it just in certain sections?

Both of the clubs, the original one in the east side lower deck stands, and the new one in the North endzone. And of course all of the luxury suites.

But for the general public? No way, Jose!

That's still "limited" to only the people who donate enough to have membership to the corral club, or their "agents." That's not quite the same as beer being sold within the stadium walls to the general public-- only the priveleged members of the various clubs and luxury suites receive that benefit.

Remind me what the rational is to not sell beer to the general public... is it a legal thing, NCAA rule, or what? I've just never seen a time when UT passes on revenue, and this would clearly be a money maker. And it can't be some kind of ethical stance, since it is available if you fork over enough bucks. Just running some numbers, if everybody bought 1 beer, that's $400,000, assuming UT made $4/beer. Even if it's half that, that's a lot of money left on the table. Or is it purely an incentive to get people into suites and clubs, where they make even more money?

The NCAA has nothing to do with it, they only regulate alcohol sales for events they hold (like March Madness). Even though every school could do it if they wanted, there are only 5-6 schools who play in a campus stadium who sell beer, and a few on top of that who play in professional/municipal stadiums who do. I think for most it comes down to the fact that a lot of people can't handle their ******* **** at a sporting event when they get more than a drink or two in them.

It seems unfair to some that people get to drink in the suites, but go to any NFL game and note where you see more drunken altercations - in the upper deck behind the end zone, or in the suites...

Interesting article from last fall about this in the WSJ:

It's actually kind of confusing. Both USC and UCLA sell beer at their games, Coliseum and Rose Bowl respectively. No beer (from a practrical standpoint at least) at the Big 12 Championship but plenty at the bowl games, Holiday, Fiesta and Rose. Beer in the Disch if you but a cheap little pass but none in the stands. Beer in the drum for a concert but none for basketball.

The Big 12 championship game is a conference rule they put in place for (I believe) the 2005 game. It was flowing like water in SA in 1999 and Irving in 2001...

Ah, it's an "anticipating bad behavior" thing. Probably the same reason Texas/OU will never be a night game. I suppose it's a sensible thing to do. Still, it seems like a more egalitarian policy would be the norm, this being a university setting and all.

Thanks for the link, Ignatius.

When they cut to the crowd they don't want to show all of the students over 21 (and their best friends under 21) going nuts with a beer in their hand.
