Question

My instructor just said that almost NO college stadiums sell beer at games. Is this true? What about Texas games, can you buy beer in the stadium?

A majority of venues do not serve alcohol, and by majority, I mean large majority.

The few exceptions are for venues which are not solely for college use but allow college games to be played there.

The one that comes to mind right off the top are St. Johns, who uses Madison Square Garden for all home games. I know there are many more

I'm almost positive the answer is "no." As a matter of fact, I seem to recall people going back and forth out of the Cotton Bowl to buy beer outside of the stadium. I'm also pretty sure this ban extends to all NCAA sports.

Nope, can't buy beer at DKR-TMS. But you can at the Rose Bowl, which is Texas' other home field. So yes, you can buy beer at Texas games.

I bought a Ziegen Bock at Robertson Stadium in 2001 when we last played UH in Houston. That was on campus. I don't know how they were allowed to sell beer on campus, but I wasn't complaining!

I bought beer at the Superdome vs. Tulane, but that wasn't on campus and is a multi-use venue and anything goes in the Big Easy!

I remember Houston and Tulane selling it.

They sell it at the Big 12 Championship game also (football - but not hoops).

I think Colorado State was the last college-owned football stadium to stop selling beer.

At some stadiums where the school does not own the stadium (UCLA in the Rose Bowl, for example), you can get beer. I don't know offhand if you can get beer at a UCLA game, I'm just using that as an example of the school not owning the stadium.

I believe you can get beer at most bowl games (someone else may know this better), and definitely at the Rose Bowl game.

I'm not sure how they do it, but U of H sells beer at most of their sporting events. They sell Bud products at football, basketball, and baseball games. Hell they had a beer stand at their softball game vs Texas last week.

I don't think there's an NCAA policy against it, I think it's like someone mentioned above, just a general school policy. Maybe the NCAA simply frowns upon it, which is enough of an excuse for most schools.

Also, as was mentioned, the schools can make a lot of money with the private clubs. BTW, the private clubs are also probably why UT has cracked down on alcohol coming in the stadium. Heck, I remember when people would bring those suitcase bars into the stadium and serve drinks right up in the stands. Not any more...

People bringing alcohol inside the stadium are essentially bringing it into a private club (I think the entire stadium is considered part of the club), which I'm pretty sure jeopardizes UT's liquor license for their private clubs.

Like others said, there's no NCAA ban on selling alcohol at on-campus facilities, but there are very, very few that still do...I know that a couple of years ago Tulsa, UH, and a couple of California schools (San Jose State?) still did, but most don't, outside of the 'club' thing.

Most schools who play in a pro stadium don't have control over the concessions, so that's why you'll get beer in places like Tulane, or at the Rose Bowl. The NCAA tournament makes it a condition of getting awarded a site that you won't sell during a game, so the year we won the regional in San Antonio, you couldn't get beer during the game even though it flows like water during the Alamo Bowl. I'm not sure what the deal is with the club level at Reliant for the NCAA tourney, hopefully I'll find out in a couple of weeks...

honest question Mac, when was the last home game you saw?

I would figure that anger fades after 5 years of missing games.....

At the Big 12 championship this year in the Alamodome you could not buy beer because it was a NCAA/BIG12 sponsered event. At the Alamo Bowl you could buy beer because it was not a NCAA sponsered event.

I got into some serious trouble a few years ago when I smuggled my Jim Beam traveler into the Houston Cougar baseball field to watch a game against our Horns. I discovered they sold beer....and I proceeded to get into a serious altered state of awareness that night.

Has nothing to do with who owns the stadium or where its located.

The U of Hawaii sells beer at their on-campus stadiums, except if the game is an NCAA championship event, such as volleyball regionals.

This thread is so misinformed.

NCAA does not regulate alcohol sales at conference events.

The conferences regulate that. Big XII does not allow alcohol sales at regular season Big XII conference events without some sort of private club affiliation in school venues. (i think that's the exact specification)

Postseason Big XII events are subject to special rules. Football championship used to allow stadium-wide sales. I think Texas pretty much ****** that up with our 2001 showing.

In Reliant 2005, no alcohol sales except for club level.

Other conferences have different rules. Texas-Tulane in the Superdome had full on liquor sales.

No NCAA sponsored events (March Madness) can serve alcohol. Bowls/MNC are not NCAA sponsored events.

Most schools/conference have realized that it's probably not a good idea and have banned them for regular season games. It's not universal, though.

I know I got some details wrong, but that's the overall gist of it.

This is all I could find.

"Alcoholic beverages shall not be sold or otherwise made
available for public consumption at any championship event sponsored by or administered by the Association, nor
shall any such beverages be brought to the site during the championship (during the period from the time access
to the site is available to spectators until all patrons have left the facility or area used for competition)."

31.1.15 Availability of Alcoholic Beverages.
