I'm the guy who created the Save The Cactus Cafe Facebook Group that's gotten some pub over the past few weeks. I'm a UT grad, Texas Exes Life Member, 10-year employee of the University, and a musician who's played 4 gigs at the Cactus Cafe in the past year. It's indeed a legendary space that I believe will be missed if closed.

Having read a number of the statements and messages from Union Director Andy Smith, he hasn't made a single mention of trying to make it more profitable. No brainstorming. No "hey Cactus fans, give money or I'll close the sumbitch." Not even as much as a "Donate" button anywhere online.

Seems like a couple hours of brainstorming and a press release could work wonders. Actually, it has. SaveTheCactusCafe.org did that. A group of strangers, coming together with a cause, within a week of accepting donations we've collected about 20% of their elusively stated annual shortfall.

I have a lot more to say, but will step off my soapbox for the moment. Thanks for getting the ball rolling here on HornFans.

This venue is a great place to listen to live music. It's not just a bunch of struggling folk singers who play there. I have heard many world class musicians from all over the world and have heard many different styles of music. I always thought of it as one of Austin's best kept secrets. Well maybe it was. I hope that it continues to be one of Austin best not so secret places to enjoy music.

Texas, please save this spectacular music venue.

Went a couple weeks back to see my old mate Tim Easton.

Folky folkie.

Hadn't been there since seeing Charlie Hunter in the mid 90s. It is cozy.

Before seeing Hunter I think I last saw a CC show in the late 80s or early 90s when the venue was downstairs (Ed Hall and Cotton Mather).

In a town with so many live music spaces, the CC is not indispensable. It is, however, kind of unique in its layout and location (on campus). Really is a nice spot, though I can't see anyone that really rocks hard playing there.
