This season I've noticed the Horns on offense play too tentatively.
They're doing it today as well.
Guy gets ball on perimeter with space between him defender.
He pauses, two-hands the ball toward his chest looking for the mandatory Hoosier pass.
The defender moves toward him from the zone position.
The Horn player takes a dribble and helps close the gap, I guess looking for a better shot?
Soon the zone has pushed into the Horn players.
There is no motion, no flow, no sharp cuts.
The Barnes-required-Hoosier-passes continue for the mandatory number of times.
Soon all high percentage shots are passed up. Then comes a bad shot.
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Meawhile, miles away, Calipari just cuts'em loose and lets his thoroughbreds run and play.
I just wish Barnes would do the same. Yes, there are times you get a ball on the permimeter and it's low percentage and no one in position for an offensive board. But other times the ball comes to you in a way you have a natural move into a shot. And without dribble. THOSE are the ones I'm upset about. Why force a pass anymore than forcing a shot.
This offense has looked hog-tied all season long. The guys are in shackles and afraid to take the game as it comes to them.
One other thing, K-State's defense looks better run than ours, and their offense is light years better by design. They are playing well into the paint on offense, we are not. It looks like two teams on opposite ends of the spectrum.
I think basketball is a game better played in a flow than in a herkey-jerkey overly-mental "oh, **** the coach wants me to..." way.
My opinion only, and I'm not a coach or player, so what do I know? Fan view only.
Barnes needs to have this team run and press for the whole game. They seem more comfortable when they do. Maybe because they don't think as much and just play.
KSU still hasn't shot a FT in the 2nd half and meanwhile we almost have more FT attempts than FG attempts. KSU's outside shooting has gone cold and they can't seem to take it at the rim like we can.
This team is so much better when they play up tempo on both ends of the court. If they get into a grind it out game they just seem to lose focus and make stupid decisions and bad plays. When they pressure on defense and play in the open court in offense they seem to be more in a flow and they don't seem to let their mistakes bother them.
