BCS Era Champions

Always fun to look back and think about past champions. Decided to review the schedules and results of the past BCS champions and rank them.

1 - 2005 Texas - Best team of the BCS era.
2 - 2001 Miami - I thought I would put them 1 when I started this list, but after I took an objective look at this team, I just couldn't do it. They probably had more talent than any team of the BCS era, but having the most talent doesn't mean you have the best team. Very good team. Struggled in some regular season games against some quesionable teams. Blew out a Nebraska team that had no business playing for a MNC.
3 - 1999 FSU - Had a WTF game against a crap Clemson team and almost lost, but this was a very good team. Beat down just about every one else they played.
4 - 2004 USC - Struggled several times in the regular season against some questionable teams and then blew out an OU team in the championship game that completely folded.
5 - 1998 Tennessee - When they won their MNC, I thought "this really isn't that great of a team." When I look back at it and review who they played and how they did, this is a much better team than I once thought.
6 - 2000 Oklahoma - A solid champion. Not spectacular. Beat some very good teams. Struggled against some teams they should not have, but still won.
7 - 2002 Ohio State - Worst undefeated team of the BCS era. Should have had a few losses (a couple of which would have come to some crap teams). PI in the endzone against Miami shouldn't have been called. Was very lucky to win the MNC, and I would alsmost go so far as to say this was a fluke championship.
8 - 2006 Florida - Had some great games and some not so great games, but was able to play for a MNC as a 1-loss team and took advantage of it.
9 - 2003 LSU - See 2006 Florida. I would also add that USC would have beat them had the BCS not screwed the Trojans.
10 - 2007 LSU - A 2-loss "champion" that should have had 4 or 5 losses. Both of their losses came to unranked teams. Got very lucky to win some of their games. Worst champion of the BCS era.

Curious how the BCS screwed USC in 03, given that they had the weakest schedule of the 3 contenders, lost to the worst team of the 3 contenders, and had the weakest wins of the 3 contenders?

oh i forgot, they lost first, so they were 1 in the human polls, WHATTA TRAVESTY

TXSooner,

Perhaps "screwed" was not the best word to use. I do think 2003 USC was better than 2003 LSU. USC was 3-0 against Top 6 teams. LSU was 3-0 against Top 7 teams. LSU had a 12 point loss to an unranked team in Baton Rouge. USC lost in on the road, in a rivalry game (though they were unranked), in triple OT by 3. Like I said, if it was settled on the field, I think USC beats LSU.

The problem is the BCS put an OU team that lost by 28 points in the CCG in the MNC game.

I agree with your no. 1 Horns83. Arguments can be made for other teams but we had one big edge - Vince Young. That year we thorughly beat final No. 23 Oklahoma and No. 15 Texas Tech. We also had beat on the road No. 4 Ohio State (who would lose one more close game to No. 3 Penn State on the road) and of course USC in the championship game.

Our close games were of course to highly ranked USC and Ohio State.

The only other tough game was with the Aggies and I think some of our players were ill and the game was on the road and we only beat them by 11 points. But we did have control of that game in the fourth quarter.

I'd flip 04 USC and 99 FSU. That 04 SC team was legit and better to me than the 05 team to me because of their defense. I have a feeling they would have kept Weinke is on his *** all night. The 04 SC team would've been a great match for the Canes and Horns as well. Oh and nobody in the BCS era would've beat Texas.

'98 Tenn had serious luck. most great teams had to struggle a couple of times and make a big def stand or hit (or block)a late fg, ect... but Tenn won 2 games where they're behind and no longer controlled there own destiny. (within reason) Ark simply needs to take a knee but qb fumbles, and I believe it was Syracuse (1st or 2nd game) misses like 20 yd fg at buzzer. those were not examples of a champion coming thru but rather a defeated team being handed a win. Not 100% sure but I think AnM beating Kst in B12 title put Tenn in title game... I'd move Tenn down a little

to pile on to the buckeyes, they didn't play iowa that season and iowa was a bcs game winner and would have been a tough one for the buckeyes.

also, what am i missing that gets them to 14-0? did they sneak a big 10 championship game in while i wasn't looking, or are they counting their scarlet and gray game like some other team?

i believe usc alone in '06 rose had as many or more future nfl'ers as mia. I pretty sure on offense the fullback was the only starter not drafted

I know I'm biased, but I will go to my grave thinking TX was better than that Miami team. Here is why.

Imagine if we had swept through the regular season and beaten a 1-loss Ohio St. or a 1-loss LSU to win the MNC. A pretty good case could be made that that TX team would have been one of the top handful of BCS-era champions. As it was, we played USC. A team that many considered the greatest team of the modern era, on their turf, and won.

So, we did every thing a Top 5 BCS-era champion should do - win and win convincingly - AND beat USC.

I'll give the nod to Texas.

Horn83,
You list is the worst I have every seen of the BCS Championship teams.

I would bet you any amount you want that if those teams played each other in a round robin 10 times, no team wins the Championship more than 2 times.

Ohio St is the weakest team on the list, slow at OL, DL, WR, DB, etc wouldn't have much a cgance against the faster teams.

I would doubt OSU would win any of the 10 round robins.
