A while back there was a debate as to the overall quality of BBQ in San Antonio. I live here and contend that it sucks, and many posters held up BBQ Station as a counter-example. I hadn't been there in some time(in order to weigh in w/an opinion), but I had lunch there today at 1pm. It's not bad, but I wouldn't say it saves SA from being the black hole of BBQ that I believe it is(in the otherwise fertile BBQ region of South-Central TX). Below are my findings.
Brisket - slightly dried out, dark gray color, moist but not much smoke flavor that I could detect - did OK w/bread, sauce, pickle & onion - on its own, not so great. Grade - C
Pork Ribs - fatty, slightly chewy, but much flavor, needed no sauce. B+
Sausage - hard to screw up, really. Individual links, coarse, grainy texture, good peppery flavor.
B+
Sides - beans, potato salad, essentially flavorless. C-
Sauce - not too sweet, not too tomato-ey, vinegar-based, but not much flavor either. I'm not really a huge sauce guy, but I give it a solid B.
Price - brisket/sausage combo plate w/two pork ribs a la carte plus drink, $13.30. A little pricey, can't complain much except for the paltry amount of brisket given.
Service - excellent A+. Ambience A-.
Overall grade B-. Better than Rudy's and Bill Miller's, but not by a whole lot. Not as good as three of my favorite Austin spots(Ruby's, Artz', and House Park). Anyway that's my contribution to hornfans BBQ awareness.
