BBQ road trip: Lockhart v. Luling

Going on a BBQ road trip with some friends on Saturday and we're thinking about Lockhart or Luling. I've been to Smitty's a few times, which I love, but I've never been to Kreutz's in Lockhart or City Market in Luling. Any quick thoughts between the two?

Both!

They're 15 miles apart.

On the same road.

(We expect a full report on our desks first thing Monday morning!)

As a former Caldwell County resident (lived on the outskirts of Lockhart during junior high and high school), I'll offer that you can't go wrong with either.

Lockhart has more choices, but Luling's City Market is good. Just be sure to avoid Black's.

A oft-overlooked gem is Chisholm Trail. Locals call it Floyd's after the owner, Floyd Wilhelm. It's sort of the "Luby's" of Caldwell County barbecue, but it's a great bargain.

Chisholm Trail is an amazing bargain and the food is good. It has to be to stay in business all these years in Lockhart.

I happen to like Black's as a change of pace, but there's nothing wrong with Kruez's or Smitty's obviously.
