BBQ - Lockhart or Luling

Going to be driving down 183 on the way to Port Aransas from Austin for some fishing next weekend and will be stopping along the way for some BBQ. I know this is an ongoing debate, but I'd love to hear some suggestions on where to stop. Thanks in advance.

Luling, definately.

I'm making a road trip tomorrow and will be there.

Dallas to Elgin, to Lockhart, to Luling, to Llano, then to Dallas.

I was going to make a stop in Dublin and get some Dr. Pepper, but their old time soda shop closes at 5 and I don't think I'll be able to do it.

yeah, I know I can find it in a store, it was just the fun of going to the actual plant and going to the old timey soda shop.

To the original poster, if you go to City Market, bring cash. No cards accepted, no out of town checks.

They do have an ATM right there in the store, but who knows what kind of fee it will charge you.

if you go to the Dr. P. museum in Waco, you can buy dublin dp. they also have a soda fountain, where they actually fix your dp in the cup for you from syrup and co2.

****** Also, you can get a fountain dp float, made with blue bell HM vanilla!!!

***** also, also, you can buy the dp syrup, which can be used as a syrup to pour over a bowl of blue bell vanilla.

Can't speak to the Luling offerrtories, but I'll take Blacks overr Smitty's (or Kreuz) when discussing Lockhart Q.

Luling City Market by a long margin. The one and only place in Texas I could honestly recommend as being a "must go to when in Texas" kinda joint.

I've found that kreuz and city market are just a son volt's trace album and cruise around each town's square with the windows down away from each other.

so why choose? eat at both. even if you hurt yourself a bit.

We stopped at Luling City Market today on the way back from Galveston.

It was great, but I don't know that it was significantly better than Smitty's. Some of the pork ribs were a bit overcooked, but all were mighty flavorful. The brisket was tremendous. The sauce -- yes, the sauce -- was a vinegar-based concoction that had a bit of spice to it, and it provided a nice change of pace to the straight brisket.

For me, I'd call it just about a tie. Maybe I'd give Luling the slight edge. I like Smitty's atmosphere better, though, and if it's a question of which one I'd go do from Austin, I'd probably pick Smitty's, just for the shorter drive.

Tyler:

I am 99% certain that those two restaurants share no common tie at all. not ownership, management, etc.

especially not allsomeness.

Does anyone know the hours at Luling? I tried to Google them but I couldn't find anything on line. If no one knows, I will call them later when they open.

take out only after 5:45pm. I got there a little past 5pm on a Friday and they were out of brisket, so get there early.

Stopped at City Market there on Friday for lunch. Better than advertised. I'd have to put it slightly above the Hard 8 in Stephanville and on par with Cooper's (my two favorites before stopping in Luling). Thanks to everyone who offered up their advice.
