the little comment about the ribs in the article are SO FALSE. mine were awesome! you can have the Louie Muellers and Mikeskas joints. this one beats all of them in taylor and is never advertized. the cook is an old veteran.
ENJOY
they still serve the beer in those old 1970 style styrfoam koozies...

been there. it's solid, no doubt. but to contend anything punts Mueller's is just crazy talk.

road trip

i could eat bbq every day lunch and dinner for the rest of my life and be just fine

but then again, i'd die soon

Not a secret if you live there...

Too bad you're too late to see the door with the "Colored Only" sign over it.... And by too late I mean by only 20 years or so...

i must say it is a trip back into time, 70ish...
funny you say that. wife said she thought it still was somewhat segregated but i told her there are a lot of old places like that where that goes on. Prause's Meat Market in La Grange still has the division wall and sometimes it still is in action. very strange to see.
back to the bbq though. very good stuff. i really liked the brisket and ribs with the sausage plate.
just a place you gotta try once.

Agree with you there. I play in a polka band out at the SP every few months (tomorrow night in fact) and a couple of the other guys in the band always roll in with some Vencil Mares' (and that what the locals call it, not Taylor Cafe).

Rudy Mikeska's has gone to hell, doesn't even stay open late anymore, and I know, it's heresy, but I've never been a big Mueller's fan. I'll take Vencil's anytime....

My first visit to that joint was about 1963 - the white folks sat at the right hand counter, the blacks on the left. Pretty good BBQ, but not up to old Mueller standards, IMO. Mikeska's was always a distant 3rd place.

If you really want to know about a secret BBQ joint in Taylor - Davis Market. Now let me warn you, it is on the bad side of town. I haven't been there in about 5 years, but it was very very good and in a very very bad part of town.

I hear that part of town has cleaned up some, and I don't know that I can vouch for the current state of the BBQ, but if you ever have a hankering for something different while your there you should give it a try.

This is from someone who grew up living in Taylor and working at Mikeskas (and yes Muellers is better than Mikeskas). The only problem is that I can't vouch for its current goodness. I know it was better than anything else in Taylor when I was in high school.
