I made my 9 year old son a Big Red milkshake. The first thing out of his mouth was that it tasted just like bubble gum.
If you've never made a Big Red milkshake, I highly suggest trying it. Even if you don't like Big Red. Lots of people grimace when I say it, but 95% of those who try it, like it.
The thing about Big Red is it is not a strawberry or cherry flavored drink that you might think it is because it is red.
It is actually a vanilla flavored drink.
When I was a kid before there was cable television we had an antenna so we could pick up San Antonio stations.
Friday nights were Project Terror night at my house.
A local SA show that showed the old horror movies.
Classic.
But on Saturday morning there was a show from SA that was like American Bandstand or Soul Train that had a bunch of teenagers dancing to the day's hit music ala Dick Clark.
Their big sponsor was Big Red.
It was not even available in Austin back then.
We made sure that on our trip to SA that we tried Big Red.
Good stuff and it's vanilla base flavor is why it is so good with vanilla ice cream.
I've also tried the Big Red Vanilla Float (I think that's what it's called.. They actually have this flavor of Big Red...), and it was very sweet. Tasted like cake icing, actually.
I'll have to try a real Big Red float, and the big red milkshake...
Forgot to mention that I grew up in Kirby (moved when I was 6) and the Big Red bottling plant was down the road on Highway 78.....the Binz Engleman road exit off of I35.
Growing up in Austin, my Dad owned a BBQ restaurant. I was in heaven because in addition to brisket, ribs, and sausage, I got Big Red and nanner pudding with nilla wafers just about whenever I wanted.
My sister sent me a Texas Monthly article on Big Red several years ago. It is apparently based on creme soda (vanilla flavor), but they add orange oil and lemon oil--and a whole lot of red dye. Every now and then I geet an urge to try to duplicate Big Red flavor starting with creme soda, but I haven't tried it.
I suspect the citrus oil is obtained by mashing the skins of the fruit.
My 5th grade year we (me, little bro, little sis) stayed w/ a friend's mom after school every day. She would make the most badass homeade Big Red ice cream in that churn thing w/ the saltwater. Damn that was good ****.
Does anyone remember "Red Rattler"? Was a knock-off of Big Red, advertised like crazy on the radio in Austin around 1993. I think they are long gone now.
We have mentions of both a Big Red milkshake and a Big Red ice cream--but we need instructions on these items.
I think the Texas Monthly article said Big Red was originated by a Waco company. It was available in Killeen in the late 1950's, and perhaps before then.
