Baylor Women's Tennis Line Up...

What do you guys think about how Baylor runs their system?

TEXAS used to own the Big 12 in Tennis and now they are just going to be 2nd place until Baylor does something different.

Baylor's entire line up (almost) is made up of foreigners and THEY CAN PLAY!

I am assuming TEXAS could recruit like that if they wanted to.

What do you guys think?

I think your posts are tired and stale.

I think that aggy wishes they could be TEXAS. Wait, I know they do. I think that all programs have ebbs and tides but those of the Horns tends to be shorter than most other teams, usually. I think it don't mean a ****. No matter what at the end of the day...

WE ARE TEXAS.

We being we.

You have addressed several different issues; as far as foreign players are concerned this is obviously quite common in collegiate sports, and even more prevelant in tennis for a variety of reasons. The Horn women have a pretty diverse lineup, with two foreign squad members and four others from out-of-state. Of course the Baylor lineup is something else altogether...8 of 9 members are foreigners (representing eight different countries and the ninth is from North Carolina!). There has been some controversey in the past about the use of so many overseas players....I'm not going to get into all of that...let it suffice to say I don't think you're ever going to see a Horn lineup made up exclusively of foreign talent. I think we're always going to see a healthy number of homegrown, and specifcally, in-state talent on the squad, and that's as it should be IMO. So the question isn't "if" the Horns could recruit like that but rather should they and the answer is no.

I don't really think beating Baylor, or anyone else in particular is the primary concern...winning in general and returning to the upper echelon of the collegiate game is the issue and I think we're making progress. Certainly the upset of #5 Northwestern, a dominating 6-1 performance, was a major breakthrough. And having been ranked as low as the mid-30's this season the Horns have clawed their way back into the top 20 and are currently 18th. The win against Northwestern was particularly important because the Horns had already played four squads ranked higher than them and were 0-4 in those contests, though all could have just as easily gone the other way. The loss to TCU was a close 4-3, and in the Stanford contest we were a just a couple games shy of taking the doubles point and Ellis lost a very close three-set match at #1 singles; had both of those fallen our way we would have won 4-3 instead of losing 5-2. We also fell to Baylor 5-2 but again three of the singles matches went to three sets and a few points here and there and we might have pulled out a victory. It was about time one of these matches against a higher ranked squad went our way, and it is worth pointing out that the Northwestern team we beat 6-1 had already defeated six top 15 teams this season including #2 North Carolina and #3 Florida. This shows just how wide open the NCAA championships are this year...there are a lot of squads that have a legitimate chance of winning the title instead of just one or two teams that are dominating everyone. Earlier in the season I posted that both of our tennis squads had the talent to potentially make a final four run; my main concern with the women was the low ranking. If we didn't upset some of the higher ranked squads we were likely going to face much tougher competition early-on in the championships...now that we are up to #18 our prospects look much better and if we win out we might even find ourselves in the top 10 entering the NCAA tourney.

One of the hallmarks of our women's tennis teams in the past was finding a way to win even when we weren't supposed to. I recall a few years when we fell out of the top 10, perhaps to the high teens or low 20's, and then played a schedule vs. a whole slew of top 10 programs. We would end up winning most of these and find ourselves back in or near the top 10 by the time the NCAA tourney rolled around. I think this squad is beginnigng to show some of those same characteristics. We have something like six players on the team who have been in the ITA individual rankings at some point during their career...at the end of last season there wasn't a single Horn in the rankings anywhere. Now we have three singles players and two doubles squads that are ranked, we just upset a top 5 program and are back in the top 20. Coach Fendick continues to bring in top recruits and has her squad peaking at the right time....I think things are looking very good for our women's program.

Baylor has owned Big 12 tennis for the last 10 years, both men's and women's. the men havea team NC to their credit and two individual titles. the women have an individual of their own and are the #1 team in the nation this year.

Baylor Men's Tennis

Tourney Titles:
2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009

if that's not owning, i'm not sure what is. 16 of 20 possible titles over the last 10 years.

the title of this post was baylor women's tennis. no one is questioning their recent success, in fact that was the whole point of the post, and whether or not their system and lineup (ie/ all foreign talent) was something the horns should emulate. you posted that both bear programs had 'owned' the big12 for the past 10 years and i simply pointed out the horns had also been successful during that timeframe. our women dominated the first half of the decade and baylor the second, and our men have been more successful the past few years (you failed to mention that two of baylor's recent regular season titles were shared with the horns). horn tennis titles since 2000:

men regular season 2006, 2008, 2010
big12 tourney 2006, 2010
ncaa final four 2006, 2008, 2009 (championship match 2008)

women regular season 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004
big12 tourney 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005
ncaa final four and championship match 2005

btw the two squads that's 7 regular season titles, 6 conference tourney championships, 4 final fours and 2 NCCA team championship matches since 2000.

so....i guess you could say baylor owned women's tennis for the past 10 years except for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 & 2005 (and 2003 when the ags shared the regular season crown and osu won the tourney title). and you could say the bears totally owned big12 men's tennis for the past decade, except for 2000, 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2010. the baylor tennis program has done great things and won a lot, the men have a NC and the women are currently ranked #1...I just want to give credit where it's due and the horns have certainly had the own share of success, on both sides, the past 10 years.
