Both teams come into this game at 2-3 in conference play. Baylor (15-4) is coming off an uplifting win over A&M Wednesday which saw Melissa Jones return after a four game absence. Texas (13-6)is coming off a crushing OT home loss to ISU after leading by 14 in the second half. Baylor is ranked 14/16 in the AP/ESPN polls while Texas is 19/25. The teams split the series last season, with both winning on the road. Horns won at Waco 58-55 and lost at home 66-57.

In conference games, Texas leads in scoring at 78.4 ppg while Baylor is tied for eighth at 60.2 ppg. Baylor allows 62.6 ppg (6th)while Texas brings up the rear at 81.6 ppg (12th). They are 8th and 9th in FT %. Texas is hitting 68.9% while Baylor makes 68.6%. Their FG% is also similar with Texas holding a slight edge, 41.5% to 40.5%. That puts them at 6th and 7th ,respectively.

Defensively, Baylor is ahead of Texas in FG% defense and in 3pt % defense. The Lady Bears allow teams to hit 36.3% (2nd) of FGs while Texas has opponents hitting 45.8% (11th). In 3pters, Baylor allows 31.4% (6th) of 3pters to be made against them while Texas opponents connect on 38.7% (11th). Something will have to give here as Texas is in the league in making 3pts (42.4%)and second in number of 3s made per game (7.8). Baylor is connecting on a meager 20.5% of their 3s (11th) and averaging only 1.6 3s a game. However, Melissa Jones has hit 21 of 50 3s for the season (42.0%). Even with missing the first four league games, Melissa’s 21 made 3s are 13 more than the next best 3pt shooter for Baylor. Her 50 3pt attempts represent almost a third of Baylor’s 3pt attempts for the season. Baylor just does not rely on the 3 that much.

Baylor’s 41.0 rpg tops the league while Texas comes in at 7th with their 37.4 rpg. The teams are 1 and 2 in blocked shots with Texas first at 7.2 bpg and Baylor second with 5.6 bpg. BU’s Griner is the top shot blocker with an average of 4.8 bpg while Ashley is tied for second at 3.4 bpg. Texas is 3rd in the league in steals with 8.2 spg while Baylor ranks 9th with 5.2 spg. Expect that to go up as Jones had three steals in the A&M game. She has 34 steals for the season, an average of 2.3 spg. Her total is nearly twice as much as the next player, even with missing four games.

Individually, Baylor is led by Melissa Jones (#5, 5-10 Jr. G) with a double double average in Big 12 play (17 ppg and 10 rpg). Brittney Griner (#42, 6-8 Fr. P) is second in ppg and rpg with 16.0 and 7.8. Kelli Griffin (#21, 5-8 Jr. G) is the third Lady Bear averaging double digits scoring in Big 12 play with 10.4 ppg. Along with Griner and Griffin, Shanay Washington (#15, 6-1 Fr. G) and Terran Condrey (#20, 5-7 Soph. G) have started all five conference games. Washington took a nasty spill after making a layup against A&M early in the second half, iirc, and did not play the remainder of the game. Nothing yet about her status for Sunday’s game has been released. Ashley Field (#24, 6-2 Soph. P) and Morghan Medlock (#55, 6-1 Sr. F) have split starts at the other F position. Also averaging double digit minutes are Kimetria Hayden (#01, 5-11, Fr. G) who has played in the last four conference games and Mariah Chandler (#44, 6-2 Fr. F) who played against OSU and Missouri. Counting Jones, Baylor has an 8 player rotation. Add Chandler and they have 9 players that average 10 plus minutes a game. They have 3 others available when needed.

Griner has 24 of Baylor’s 28 blocks in league play. Griner (18-27, 66.7%) and Washington (14-21, 66.7%) are the best at getting to the FT line. Jones (9-13, 69.2% in one game) is likely to take over the lead in FTs made and attempted within a few games. Look for Jones, Griner, Washington and Griffin to be the ones to be taking the shots. Baylor doesn’t take a lot of 3s, having taken 39 and hit 8 in Big 12 play. They are shooting better for the season than the 20.5% they are hitting in league play. They were 0-3 for the game against A&M. Horns will attempt 3 3s in a five minute period.

Texas is led by four players in double digit scoring during league play: Brit (16.2 ppg), Ashleigh (12.0 ppg) and Erika and Kat with 11.2 ppg each. Kat is the top rebounder with 6.6 rpg with four others averaging at least 4 rpg and two more with a minimum of 3 rpg. Brit’s 36 FTA are a third more than the next player (Cokie at 21 FTA). Her 27 FTM are twice as much as Earnie’s 13-19. Erika, Kat and Brit are the top 3pt shooters on the team although Ashleigh’s 57.1% leads the team percentage wise. While the top scorers are the ones taking the most shots, four others are averaging between 6 and 3 shots a game. Our four top scorers are all in double digit assists in league play. Makes you wonder if they are passing the ball to each other.

Except for Lauren, every Horn has a block in league play with Ashley’s 17 leading the pack. Lauren didn’t play in the last two games and only 4 minutes against Tech after logging 10 vs Nebraska and 16 against A&M in the first two league games. Makes one hope that she didn’t tweak something against Tech.

Projected starting lineup:
[pre]Texas Baylor

Ashleigh Jones (played in one, starts this one)
Brit Washington
Ashley Griner
Kat Condrey
Earnie Griffin[/pre]

I’m looking forward to seeing Ashley and Cokie rotating on Griner. As long as Ashley continues to stay on the court, she will make it difficult for others than Griner to finish inside. Jones is the engine that makes Baylor run like a smoothly tuned engine. Brit and Kat are likely to take turns on her. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Yvonne draw this defensive assignment as Texas tries to keep fresh legs defending Jones. Washington’s status is unclear at this time. If she plays, she gives Baylor a player capable of rebounding and slashing to the basket. She would take someone off of Jones, likely Brit.

Baylor will have to stop the Horns 3pt shooting. Not that easy to do anymore with Brit, Kat, Earnie, Erika, and Ashleigh all capable of hitting from BTA. Add Yvonne, Lauren and Kristen as possible threats and they can’t concentrate on stopping one player as had been possible the last couple of years. I think the Horns will pull this out if their outside shots are dropping. Outside shooting is a big part of the Horns offense this year.

Of course, the Horns will have to play better defense and rebound better. The offense, as much as it stutters and disappears at times, is still very effective. The defense and rebonding have been a problem as shown by the number of points given up, the high FG% others are making, the negative rebounding margin and the problem corralling defensive boards which allows opponents second chances. Those second chances allowed cost the Horns late in the game against ISU.

This will be a nationally televised game. ESPN2 will carry the game starting at 4 PM. I know Kara Lawson (color) and Pam Ward (play by play) but not Brooke Miller (reporter). KVET 1300 AM will carry the game radio broadcast with Craig Way and Jon Madani doing the honors.

Both Nash sisters outrebounded Griner despite playing fewer minutes.

And what an odd statline from Baylor's Kelli Griffin - 5 points, 6 assists, 12 rebounds.
