Before these Olympics, I could have sworn every time I heard Beijing, China mentioned it was pronounced 'Beige-ing'.

However, ever since the Olympics started, all I've heard has been 'Bay-Jing'....which sounds really strange to me.

"Peking" is the spelling under the antiquated Romanization system called Wade-Giles. The same system responsible for such bastardizations as tofu (actually "dofu") kung fu (gong fu) and Kuo Ming Tang (Guo Ming Dang). Under the modern and much more intuitive Pinyin system, Peking is written as Beijing. The pronunciation in Chinese never changed.

The corect pronunciation is "Bay Jing" with the "j" spoken as in "Jeep." I think now that many foreign journalists have gone to Beijing, they've heard it pronounced correctly and approiately adjusted their own pronunciation.

Cna someone enlighten me as to the proper pronunciation of my favorite dish in Asian cuisine: General Tso's Chicken?

Texanne, in Texas it's called General Joe's Chicken.

No such dish exist in Asian cuisine, it's purely American. At the naval academy it's called Admiral Tso's Chicken.
