Bathroom Tile Questions!!!

Are any of y'all experienced tile persons?

We are fixing to replace all of the tile in our master shower except for the floor. The reason we are doing this is that the wallboard that the tile was installed over got wet, got weak and the tile collapsed and we have a big hole in the shower wall.

My question is what kind of backer to use behind the tile in the shower. We are not going to use greenboard as I think that that was what was probably behind the tile in the first place and it failed. We are going to use the 1/2 inch as it is on a wall.

It looks like the choices are a ceramic board called Hardiebacker or something like it and Wonderboard which is fiberglass mesh wrapped concrete looking stuff.

Have any of you used any of this, what do you recommend and what kind of tips do you have.

Thanks!

Hardiebacker is the way to go. It is a concrete based product and it won't melt away like the green board did. My family is in the tile business and none of their installers will even tile anything in a shower/bathroom unless they have some type of hardiebacker/concrete board down first.

The Hardiebacker says to use a waterbarrier between it and the studs. What would be the best thing to use for that?

Good question, I've watched many a tile layer nail that stuff directly to the studs and go to town, even in my own home.

You can use 15# felt for the vapor barrier. We have used 1/2" Durock with success on many projects in the past, but the Hardiebacker is probably as good, and is easier to cut and handle, I think. Check on taping the joints in the backer board before you install the tile.

If I use the #15 felt as a moisture barrier how do I seal up the joints in it. Do I overlap it and seal it with roofing cement?
