Bass Guitar Strings

I'm getting the kid a beginner bass for his bday. Not a junker, but decent entry level. It will, no doubt, come with crap strings. It has been 30 years since I picked up a bass, but from what I remember flat wound play easier, but but round wound sound better. I am sure the technology has changed lots since I played. Recommendations, please.
