Baseball adds JC transfer for 2012 season

As someone who works at a community college and is on the athletic advisory committee, I agree completely. Many of these kids were just flat overlooked coming out of high school, but playing juco gives them the everyday reps they need, and some of them are just darned good.

I wish we'd look a little more at juco transfer. They come in game-ready.

People mature at different rates so it is understandable that a couple of years of after high school maturity could help a few. However the other issue is the grades issue. Most high school seniors who can play either go pro or go to a four year school. Assuming the player has evidenced the skills for either but ends up going JUCO most probably means grades issues. Successful matriculation at a JUCO does not automatically wipe out the grade problem as evidenced by the first sentence of that press release.

In this case it looks like Augie has found one of those nuggets.

Moynihan was doing well at SD. I asked my California CC baseball friend if he had a story, and he said when a guy goes from Div. 1, to CC, and to a different Div. 1 school, it's usually not grades that forced him out of the first place.

Roger Clemens was a chubby kid with a good arm coming out of Spring Woods. After San Jac he was a lot thinner, had a better arm, and was much closer to the hall of famer that he became.

Agree with Texanne. Some of these kids aren't promoted in high school for whatever reason and are ready to go. Their grades aren't an issue. A Junior College is an amazing way for some of these kids to go for at least a year or two.

Texanne, if you will reread my statement I said the reasons to go JUCO was additional time to mature or grades. Not liking a coach and then going JUCO probably falls into the maturity area as there is a process one goes through when being recruited. For me it was - can I play for this guy?

Regardless, it looks like Augie found a real nugget.

During Gus' late 70s thru mid 80s I know we got a lot of JuCo talent.

Gardenhire, Bruno, Goldthorn, Dophied, Withrow, Clemens, Kem Wright, Hearron, Tolentino*, Labay*, Cook, Loy, on and on.

*not 100% sure of the asterisk guys, just going by old memory that they came from Juco's

* yes
Labay played at Angelina JC in Lufkin , same as Cook but a year apart
Tolentino I believe was Seminole JC

re: Patrick - I don't remember Mike playing JC ball, he transferred from Rice

Looks like we added another:

I like it. Maybe Augie's finally fed up with the lack of pop.

My understanding is that a player must have completed eligibility through his junior year to be draft eligible. Both signees appear to be sophomores so they will be around for at least one year.

Your eligible to be drafted at any time while attending a JC. If attending a 4 year school then you must either complete your junior year or reach age I believe 21 within a certain amount of time before the draft is held. So anyone in a JC is eligible to be drafted and you stand a chance they dont show up in the fall.
