planning on staying around union square in san fran and am trying to decide whether to use BART of a taxi to get there. i understand BART will stop along Market St. But i don't know if it is a short walk to union square area or do i need a taxi when i get off BART go get to my hotel. also do you have a hotel to recommend or NOT recommend.

thanks

Cab from SFO to SF costs ~$40.

Bart costs $5, takes 30 minutes and runs every 15 minutes.

It is an easy walk from Union Square to Bart. If you can spare 15 minutes, take it. The Terminal is on the North side of the International Terminal.

Regarding hotels, list what you are considering and we will bat them around.

Just got back from a week in San Fran.

Take the BART definitely. As mentioned, costs about $5. Hop on at the airport, get off at the Powell St. station, walk to Union Square.

If you look on google maps, it tells you where the powell street station is (Powell at Market) --Union Square is like three blocks away

Or maybe 5 blocks, and straight up hill. And, if its after dark, you can dodge the bums that congregate at Powell and Market.

I really depends on how much luggage you have, and how much money you have.

I would suggest calling your hotel and asking them for suggestions. You'll get good directions and a sense of how long your walk will be with luggage.

I just stayed in right off Union Square and used the BART. The previous info is all correct.

I had one rollaboard type suitcase and it was no big deal taking it up the slight incline for the couple of blocks to the hotel. I arrived in the daytime and left at night and felt fine with it both times. There were a few hooligans abound at night, and though it wasn't enough to worry me at all I probably would not want my wife to make the same journey by herself after dark.

You could always take the BART to Powell St. and then cab it for the short hop to the hotel.

an alternative between taxi and bart is super shuttle. The cost is around $16, so more than BART but less than taxi. Drawback is, they go to several hotels. if you hit it lucky, goes quickly. if not, you might get a tour of the city. But it does drop you off at the door of your hotel. If you have one rollerbag, take bart. If you have more luggage and don't want taxi fare costs, take super shuttle.
