Barnes says leaning to redshirt Chapman

Wangmene and Hill played pretty well. Both showed a lot of improvement from their average performance from last year. Hamilton was tough on the boards, a very nice and unexpected contribution. Thompson looked strong in debut. Team, while lacking much real length, could probably get by without Chapman this season, but we'll see how it goes against some bigger lineups. The game against Illinois could be very telling.

why would we need to redshirt chapman? Are we going to have a need for a 6-10 non rebounder who likes to shoot from outside next year?

"Are we going to have a need for a 6-10 non rebounder who likes to shoot from outside next year?"

Unfortunately, yes. We'll need any bodies over 6'7" to clog whatever holes are left.

If Daniels doesn't recommit and Thompson and Hamilton go to the NBA, Texas is left with Sheldon McClellan backing up Wangmene and Holmes at 5/4, absent acquiring a heretofore overlooked 2011 c/pf prospect.

That's reason enough.

Chapman, btw, has a rebound every 4.6 minutes, the same rate as Hill. Gary Johnson came into the year with one every 4.34 minutes.

"who likes to shoot from the outside"?

Chapman has attempted 2 three pointers in his three years at Texas. And last year, his 58% field goal percentage was 2nd best on the team.

Chapman is currently better than Hill and also has more potential. He actually has a decent low post game. I thought he was ok last year in his limited minutes. Certainly better than Pittman. He can run the floor and has ok touch.

This is a good thing for both him and Texas. This year he would split time with Hill and that would affect both of their development. Next year he will likely be the undisputed starter and could easily get 20+ min per game. Wouldn't surprise me if he parlayed the extra year into spot in the Euro League or perhaps even better. He has good size.

Hill is a fifth-year senior. Johnson's a senior. Wangmene already had an injury redshirt. Thompson is not going to redshirt. Chapman hasn't redshirted and is the only option to do so.

Logical decision under the circumstances.

I hope we get at least 3 years out of both Joseph and Thompson. That would be awesome. This program needs some quality consistency.
