not exactly surprising, but crap.

said those exact words on the postgame radio show.

paraphrasing, he said they don't know for certain yet, but that it doesn't look good.

what's weird is that looking at the replay, I would have guessed it was his left knee, not his right knee. The left knee is the one it looked like he came dawn awkwardly on, but the right knee is actually what he injured.

The Statesman is saying Ward is likely out for the season. Really tough break for Varez and the Longhorns. Fortunately for the Horns, Balbay is playing great and Jai Lucas is waiting in the wings, so we should be OK at point. Would Ward be eligible for a medical waiver to save a year of eligibility?

I don't put much stock at all in the Statesman's blurbs, so I'll wait until the team makes an official announcement on that, but yes, he would be eligible for a medical redshirt if he doesn't play again this year.

Pretty sure that he doesn't need a medical redshirt. If I am not mistaken, you can play a percentage of games up to a point and still redshirt. I would think he still qualifies for a redshirt given he only played in three games.

You cannot take a normal redshirt if you play even one second. The rule about percentage of games played is for medical redshirts only.

Varez would qualify for a medical redshirt if he does not play again this year and if the program can substantiate his injury, which, clearly, they can. Medical redshirts are not automatic, but pretty much the only reason Varez wouldn't be approved for one is if he violates the participation rules about no playing or practicing (other than conditioning and rehab) after the injury.

The rule regarding limits on games is 30% (used to be 20) of the total games played through the NCAA championship, but all games in which the athlete participates must have been in the first half of the season.

So if you assume we play 40 games (advancing pretty much all the way), then the player can't participate in more than 12 of the first 20 games, and he cannot play again for the rest of the year after sustaining the injury, regardless of whether or not he has reached the 30% maximum yet.
