i've read the threads in this forum about barcelona, but none really addressed hotel advice.

can you please recommend moderately priced hotels in barcelona? this summer will be the absolute worst time to travel since the dollar is so weak. so i was planning for <$150/night but w/ the weak $, i'm willing for $175/night. with that said, i'd prefer something w/in walking proximity to all the restaurants and sites.

thanks.

You're gonna have to hunt to find anything decent in that price range. I was there for business about three weeks ago and stayed at the Princesa Sofia. I think it was about $250/night. I was there for a conf that was at the Hilton next to the Conf Center. The Hilton was brand new and nice. I think it was going for about $500/night. I'm guessing anything in the middle of town or near Las Ramblas will be pricey.

I stayed at the Hotel Regina and thought it was great. It's over your budget at $235/night, but I don't think you'll find much better for less. We walked to just about everything.

crash -

If you are going for fun, and not business, might I recommend renting an apartment. My wife and I honeymooned in Barcelona last October. We ended up with a 1 bedroom loft on La Ramblas for $115 a night, that is US.

We were in the middle of shopping and excellent food, plus the metro was just 100yds from out front door.

Highly recommend taking this route.

I can't remember the specific website we used, it was either lovingbarcelona.com or oh-barcelona.com. Both of them operate the same way.

You can look up by specific criteria (# of rooms; +/- AC; location), including price, and they usually have a set of pictures for your to look at.

It will also provide a calendar for you to check availability of the unit you are looking to rent.

My recommendations for you are this:

- check to see if they will accept credit cards, because a lot of them ask for cash payment up front. While the credit card does come with a deposit fee, we felt much safer going this route, as opposed to carrying around a load of cash to pay for a place for a week.

- if you do use a credit card to pay for the rental, notify your credit card company prior to your trip that you are going to Europe and will be using the card for said purposes. That way they won't deny your card for the initial transaction, and can look out for funny transactions that might pop up (which we did not have).

- before deciding on a place check out what area it's going to be in. La Ramblas if a great area, as is the Bari Gothic. You are looking for safety and relative ease to places you want to go. You may have to decide between a nicer apartment in a lesser area, or a lesser apartment in a great area. Determine your priorities.

- whatever apartment you rent, make sure it has private access, as Barcelona does have a reputation for traveling thieves. Our apartment had two doors, with separate, locks you had to go through, before you got access to the interior of the building.

- when conversing with the purveyors of the apartment (either by phone or email) make sure that the pics of the apartment you are looking at belong to the apartment you want to rent. When looking on-line, we did notice that a few of the apartments listed in the same building used the same photos for the pictorial.

That's about if off the top of my head.

The only other pieces of advice I have for you are to enjoy yourself and eat your way through the city, the food is fantastic there.

Have fun!

Hotel Gaudi is a 4 star on Gran Via. After a very quick google search, one site lists it at $168 per night. I've stayed there twice and it's a very good location. Make sure you grab some paella at La Baraca. It's right around the corner.

Oops. I was thinking Madrid. My bad.

I stayed in Hotel Medinaceli in the Gothic Quarter about 2 blocks from Las Ramblas a couple of weekends ago. It felt brand new on the inside and was had at a price of <$200 per night. Would definitely stay there again if I go back.
