Barbecue near Fredricksburg

There's one that football player Ken Hall started and later sold on the south side of Fredericksburg on the left side of the highway going to San Antonio.

It used to be very good, but I haven't eaten there in ten years.

Ken Hall's place isn't there anymore. It was replaced by some other start-up a few years ago. It wasn't bad, but nothing special. I don't know why Cooper's wouldn't be the primary option.

Some friends were going down for the Folk Festival and were trying to avoid the 40 minute drive over to Llano.

According to my wife, who is a Fredericksburg native, there still is a Ken Hall's BBQ at the location on South US Highway 87 I described above.

She says her family members still living there patronize it regularly.

I'm not looking to argue, but when I asked her just now about the subject, that's the answer I received.

So it might be worth a google.

As I mentioned, I haven't eaten there recently and besides knowing how to spell the town's name correctly, that's all I got.

Well FRED, I don't know what to tell you. I specifically went looking for Ken Hall's place several years ago on a quest to sample as many places listed in Texas Monthly's "Top 50" as I could get to. I ate there, and vaguely recall enjoying it. A year or two later, wanting a second sample, I was disappointed to see that it had been replaced by "Cranky Frank's." Frank's cue was not as good as Ken's.

I don't know if it is still Cranky Frank's or not, but that's how it was 2-3 years ago. If you Google skillfully, you'll see some outdated sites that list Ken's place, and others that list Frank's. They both have the same phone number.

I can't think of any "must have" cue between Fredericksburg and the Texas Folklife Festival. If it were me, I'd swing by Harmon's in Cibolo, but that may not fit the schedule. Alternatively, BBQ Patio on the south side is worth a trek too, but like Harmon's, it may not be close enough to Fredericksburg to fit the lunch schedule.

That being said, the Folklife Festival is mostly about eating and drinking. You may want something less filling than brisket, sausage, and ribs. Then again, there's always room for that, right?

It occurs to me that you may not be referring to the Texas Folklife Festival, which is this weekend in San Antonio. You are probably referring to the Kerrville Folk Festival, which is currently happening in Kerrville. Damn all these Central Texas Festivals and their confusing names. Ignore my advice about Harmon's and BBQ Patio unless you end up in San Antonio for some reason.
