Schwimmer does looks eerily similar to Herbert Sobel (Schimmer's Character) in real life. Hard not to think "Ross" but I see why hes the guy playing the role.

i actually like "ross" in that role. it was very difficult for him to pull it off and a big gamble by casting him there. but just like "ross" was a whiny ***** on friends, that kind of helped me accept him as the ******* whiny ***** in this one. i assume sobel wasn't alive to see the miniseries. i bet his family wasn't real happy with that. even if he was a grade A d-bag.

Sobel tried to kill himself in the '80's but he failed at that as well. He ended up blind from the shooting if I remember correctly and died a short time later.

I think he meant that because Sobel was such a dumbass, and the NCOs refused to serve under him, it forced the Army's hand. If he had been only a moderate dumbass, he never would have been replaced by Winters, and the results would have been disastrous.

Mehan's plane was shot down on D-Day and Winters assumed effective command of Easy Company

You're absolutely right HiHK. He was a brilliant trainer, but **** as a tactical commander. The way things worked out was VERY advantageous. The men all commended Winters for his combat leadership.

Just rewatched the entire thing. If your DVD set doesn't include the We Stand Alone, the Men of Easy Company...you must watch. Amazing follow up with all the real soldiers.
