aka "Beagle".

A new one going around, my [up to date] Norton is NOT catching it!!!

Luckily, it's an attachment that is dormant until or unless you click on it or[ if you're stupid] your email auto-runs it.

The email usually has the subject of "Re:" or "foto3 and MP3" though there are other possible subjects, the "From" is spoofed.

doll.scr, doll.com, MP3.txt, Music_MP3.cpl, cat.scr, and MP3.cpl are the attachments that I've seen so far, Norton doesn't recognize ANY of them as viruses even when individually scanned.

A couple more attachement names I've seen: Garry.cpl, Garry.scr, and fish.com.

I did. The second link contained no useful info at all and the first only indicated that it e-mailed itself around and reported back to the intital virus author.

Thanks jmatt. I guess that the article that I read and that you posted for me just really didn't convey to me any consequences that seemed terribly dire. Perhaps my naivete is showing, but if that's all it does, is it something that is terribly harmful?

Apparently not.

It looks like the worse it can do is clog up bandwidth with emails if enough folks got infected. Maybe eat up resources on your system and/or provide backdoor access to your computer to the ******* that wrote it.

The fact that Norton wasn't catching it was more of a concern to me than anything else, because I've never seen Norton not catch a virus that I'd received. If someone's found a way to circumvent virus scanners with a semi-harmless virus, you KNOW a nasty one can't be too far behind....

I got it from a good friend who is in the music (cd) business. The subject, mp3 player, was appropriate for an e-mail from him. I opened it at home and no attachment was opened so I tried it again at the office. I'm a dumbass obviously. At least it didn't eat my hard drive.

....Aaaaannnnnd Norton's catching it now...
