Bad Officiating?

The Horn Identity

I went over to Soonerfans.com to check their reaction after the game. I shouldn't be surprised, but there was a lot of complaints about the officiating (mostly the lack of Over the Back calls). Probably gonna get that reaction, any time the home team loses.

I didn't see the game (just listened on the radio), but I was under the impression that our bigs were flirting with foul trouble all night. I checked the stats and we were whistled for 17 fouls to their 13 = Atchley 4, James 4, Johnson 4, and Mason 3. In the second half, it seemed like they were in double bonus before we even got to one and one.

Any merit to the argument?

I was just about to post the same thing.

The refs really screwed them over and favored Texas all night long, oh yeah and the annoucers must have both been Texas grads too, they were so biased.

The announcers are biased, IMO. It is a little ridiculous having Ron Franklin and Fran Fraschilla calling Texas games.

The fans are taking their cue from their coach, who managed to have that whiny pout on his face permanently affixed. I'm still not sure what they were complaining about regarding Blake Griffin's offensive foul when he basically shoved Alexis Wangmene out of the way, and calling a foul on Atchley on either his block or the tip in would have been the wrong call.

I thought the block off the backboard was a fabulous play, but I wasn't shocked that a foul was called.

The two late ones, it was interesting. Fraschilla thought Atchley's defense was good, but the tip-in might have been over the back. I thought the opposite... that he came across the arm when reaching for the ball on defense, but on the tip-in, he never touched Griffin until after he had the ball.

I thought the game was allowed to be much more physical than it should have been, especially on the perimeter, but I thought it was evenly called.

And here I was thinking the Griffin brothers were immune from getting called from charging as I watched the first half.

As usual, the officiating was mediocre but that doesn't win or lose 99% of the games. The good teams just play through it and win it on their own. In the immortal words of an NBA coach, "it is what it is" and you go on and play.

It wasn't really that I was surprised, just wanting to make the point that the fouls actually favored the Sooners, so I don't see how they could *****.

But as I said, I didn't see the game. So, I was looking for some confirmation.

I went back and read the threads on the WBB board. A couple people mentioning Courtney Paris getting away with murder among all the posts citing no answer for the Paris twins, unable to stop Robinson's penetration, unable to knock down shots, playing the starters too much, etc. etc. That is blaming the officials for a loss????

I did think the Tennessee game last year was monumentally bad. I can't remember complaining about the officiating since then, and there were still plenty of chances to win that game even with the unbelievably abominable officiating in the second half of that one.

I sure don't think officiating was the cause of any of the losses this year, but with 2 of them being absolute slaughters while a 3rd one should have been if not for Abrams' 4 three pointers at the end to cut the final margin to six, that's hardly some kind of saintly position to take.

In all honesty, and I can't remember what the situation was....I think it was around the 5 min. mark in the second half, I remember a call going our way, and I thought we got away with one. But such is the game. Seriously, basketball is a very physical game and very rarely does the exact same play repeat itself, so the officiating is always subjective. I can't see a more difficult game to officiate.

We had more fouls then they did , yup those officals love Texas.. and the announcers sure seem to like OU

I also believe that the Tennessee game in basketball and Grant Teaff's last football game vs. Texas are the only time I have been sure that the officials were deciding the game on purpose.

Last night we had most of our front court sitting down with 4 fouls with 5 minutes left in the game and OU wasn't even in the bonus yet.
