Backpacking in Texas

Anyone know any good places to backpack in Texas? I live in Austin now, and Big Bend's a little far (I'm thinking a 4-day weekend trip). Seems like most state parks are drive-in campsites with relatively short trails. Some offer primitive camping, but I'm looking for a true backpacking trip, one where you set up camp somewhere different every night.

I've looked at Bastrop and Buescher State Parks; they're pretty close together. Is it possible to hike off-road from one to the other, or is it mostly fenced-off private land between them?

I'm hoping for something relatively long, difficult, and pretty, if those are all possible.

Consider Pedernales Falls State Park.

There's pretty good rock climbing, floating and geology. There are not too many places close to Austin where you can find tilted limestone.

But, if you really want to lose yourself for a few days, check out Big Bend or Guadalupe Mountains despite the drive. Try to make Junction after you get off work and the next day you should be on the trail by noon at Big Bend.
