Background noise?

What is that constant, annoying background noise at he World Cup games? I can't hardly stand to watch one of these games!

And you wonder why this sport hasn't caught on in America, although to be fair, listening to that sound is still better than listening to Nomar in the CWS.

love the horns, love the sport. btw, soccer is the second most played sport behind basketball in the US... so when you say it isn't popular in the US I really don't know what you are saying.

They used to allow those plastic horns at Cowboy games in the Cotton Bowl. Thank God they finally outlawed them. It's annoying enough on TV, but sitting in the stadium must be miserable. It's kind of funny, fan noise is supposed to give your team an advantage, but I can't imagine that endless hum would do anything except make the game less pleasant.

There have been reports of players saying they have a harder time communicating and being on the same page when those horns are going. Other players say that it is the same for both teams so nobody has an advantage and it sort of takes the crowd out of favor for a home team. I can see that. I guess the players, like me, are either not bothered by it, just used to them or don't mind them.

I can see where it can really annoy people and I am glad that I am not one of those people. Don't know why I am not but I ain't.

Just after playing zee German National Anthem the horn blowers could not wait to start again. It was the same instant and then the buzz. Then it faded as the Aussies played theirs and just as the music dies down, buzz. It'a almost like they know some people hate it.

they are ridiculous and are really diminishing the fun of watching the games. i'm not a diehard soccer fan, but i LOVE the WC. i watched nearly every match 4 years ago and will do so again this year, but it's just not as much fun to watch with that buzz. and it's not the buzz itself, it's that and the fact that i can barely hear any of the songs, chants, and screams from the fans who are following the action. the buzz just buzzes, no matter what. that sucks.

This fad truly sucks. They should be banned. I can't watch a world cup game with the sound on, it is too irritating. Then you find yourself doing something else and miss the one goal you were hoping to see. Stupid, stupid trend.
Can't hear fans, can't hear there songs, their chants, their taunts. Can't hear the announcers, can't watch the games. This sucks. Ban 'em, burn 'em, arrest 'em, shoot 'em, but get that noise off the tv.

the noise is killing me. im a soccer die hard. you cant even hear the crowd roar during a goal or an oooh or ahhh on a great play, cant hear songs, chants, nothing, you can barely hear the commentary. apparently, the the horns are there to stay. they are considered a cultural tradition in south africa. if a plastic horn is a cultural icon in south africa, i can see why now it is such a thriving country. enjoy your first and last world cup africa.

Vuvuzelas combined with the empty seats I've been seeing probably adds up to a loooooong time before the World Cup is in Africa again.

Every other World Cup, you'd look at the stands and it'd be like Texas/OU, half the stadium all one color, half the stadium another. Seems like no one traveled to this one, the locals aren't even filling the stands, and while they might be into the game, they don't care who wins. I want passion. I want cheers. I want singing and chanting.

hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Yeah, that's awesome.

There is already talk about banning the horns. My guess is that they let them in through the group stage and then ban them in the knock out rounds.

I love the horns. I want one. We were playing in our 12th Annual Gettin' Boney Dominoes (42) Tournament while the US vs. England game was on and several of us were making our own horn noises. Mrmrmrmrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

Sunday we had a big group of guys playing doubles disc golf at Pease and we had the horns going throughout the afternoon. Good times...

OK, fine. Tell us where your next domino tournament will be held, and loop and Texanne and eight or ten more HornFans and I will come down there equipped with those horns and blow them for the duration of your 42 games, seeing as how you like 'em so much.

Hey, don't put me in the group to assault his Domino game. I am able to ignore the horns and they don't bug me. I wouldn't mind them being banned but don't care. Also, I would not want to ruin a chance at playing disc golf if I would get an invite anyway. But I stand by disc golfers.

I've got one of those horns, but it's orange and I got it before a Texas football game years ago. Tell me where to show up with it and I'll blow it like Gabriel!

I have to say that the incessant drone of those horns ruined the 3 1/2 minutes of World Cup I've watched thus far, and it will definitely keep me from tuning in from this point on. The sound is mind-numbing. But the folks in charge have said they absolutely will not ban them. Seems they are a South African custom, and the people watching the WC in person and on TV are expected to just put up with it.

f the vuvuzela!

C'mon, Texanne--keep this up and I'm gonna start shitting on those Rangers threads.

Seriously, though, I don't see what the fuss is about. For one, I never thought those horns were unique to South Africa because I hear them at virtually every soccer match (just not in the quantity and consistency that they are being played at this WC). Secondly, the drone becomes white noise; I forget it's even there most of the time, only to notice it when there's a crescendo for a corner kick.

Also, if you played soccer and found it boring, you were doing something wrong. I understand some complaints against watching
soccer, but it's a blast to play because you are always moving--unless you're the keeper, of course.

A poster on another board said he went to a vuvuzela concert at a stadium in South African and some guys started a soccer game in the middle of the stadium thereby disrupting the concert.

I seriously question whether disc golfers would welcome any vuvuzela "music" at one of their venues. There would be a bloodbath. If it happened at a UT football game, can you imagine? There'd be more police than in the Blue Brothers movie.

Strange, but it doesn't bother me in the least. Okay, this is stranger, but I even sort of like it.
