Back to Reality - Our Anemic Offense

Like everyone, I was very pleased with the victory Wednesday. But other than the exuberance of the victory, the sideline antics, and the proported “bonding,” we still have the same glaring issue: An anemic offense. With superb field position most of the night, the O managed to score only 17 points until garbage time. And we punted “11 times!”

Regardless of the caliber of the incoming class featuring two QBs, and even with the OL challenges, to me the issue is O coaching, play-calling and scheming. If Herman sticks with Beck, my hopes are not high for much of an improvement any time soon.

Great coaching means making the most of the players you have, and adjusting. We don’t seem to do that. For example, if the O-Line can’t block, why are we running slow developing or perimeter plays? Wednesday night, it seemed as though we had success with quick developing, north south runs. And speaking of the running game, it was working with Young. Why abandon what’s working?

My enthusiasm for the coming season is tempered by the reality that unless we address what appears to be an obvious issue, it could be deja vu all over again in 18. Maybe TH has a surprise up his sleeve in the next several weeks. (I can hope.)
