Back from Chicago - some thoughts and reviews

I posted my itinerary before we left, so thought I'd follow up here with some thoughts. We got in about 2/3 of the stuff I had planned, which is about typical. Nothing ever goes according to plan, and I don't think I'd want it to. Usually, I plan lots of details for my trips in advance just so I have lots of ideas and never come to a "what the hell should we do now" or "where should we eat?" moment.

Overall, I was very impressed with Chicago, at least what I saw of it. Lakeview in general and Wrigleyville in particular is a very cool neighborhood. Lots of bars, restaurants, shopping for the chics, cool residential streets, etc. Everyone in our group loved it, and we had my in-laws and my 18 y.o. son, so there were a wide variety of ages. Chicago is the first big city I've visited that I thought I'd actually want to live in (I don't consider Austin to be a big city, although some of my Midland friends do). I love how all of the bars and restaurants open their front windows to the street and many put tables on the sidewalk to take advantage of their great summer weather. I heard people bitching about the "hot" temps in the 80s, but it sure felt nice to us and the occasional rain showers cooled things down nicely throughout the day.

Here is my original rough itinerary posted earlier (I won't bore you with my complete itinerary) with some thoughts:

Staying at Chicago Guest House in Wrigleyville
Sweet place. A renovated brownstone "two flat". First class, beautifully decorated, and plenty of room for 9 adults and a baby. The owner has three of these in the area. Highly recommended for Chicago trips with a group. Way more fun than getting a few hotel rooms. Location was perfect, a couple blocks south of Wrigley, halfway between the madness of Clark Street and the more civilized but also fun Southport. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The Link

Architecture and Lake Tour
Didn't do it. Rained the afternoon we were going to go, so instead we drank all afternoon at a brewpub downtown, Rock Bottom brewery, which I understand is a chain. Pretty decent, if unspectacular beer. We all liked their beer better than Goose Island, which surprised me. The two Goose Island beers we drank both had a very watery aftertaste. Kinda odd.

Dinner (Italian) at La Scarola
Great old school Italian place west of downtown (near United Center I believe). Loud, energetic, very fun vibe. Coolest bar that we found in Chicago was right next door. Richard's Bar is a tiny dive bar with a couple of guys behind the bar who look like they used to hang out with Frank Sinatra and might have broken a kneecap or two back in the day. Great place to sit and drink and listen to Frankie or Cash or some old school crooners on the juke box.

Two Cubs games - bleacher seats. Maybe they'll actually win a game. Man they suck this year, nothing new there I guess
Well, they won one of the two that we went to. Friday's game was a lot of fun despite the loss, including when word spread through the bleachers that Barret and Zambrano were trading punches in the dugout. Sunday's win was great. I never knew they had a song they sing when the Cubs win. Kinda cheesy, but fun. Wrigley was not a disappointment. My father in law had a huge grin on his face the whole time he was there, which was pretty cool to see because he grew up as a Cub fan as a sharecropper's kid down in Arkansas. Neat to get to experience that with him.

Dinner at Gino's East
Ate at the Superior St. location and it's just not the same as the old spot with the dark, barely sanitary basement where I ate when I was in college 20 years ago. Pizza still very good, but I'm not sure I'd go again since I'd like to try some of the other places. Took well over an hour to get our pizza, which was just too long and this was on a Thursday, so I'd hate to see what it would be like on a weekend night.

An afternoon at North Avenue Beach if the weather permits
Got rain every afternoon, so never made it. Next time.

Dinner at Andalous Moroccan
Enjoyable dinner at this small place about 7-8 blocks south of Wrigley on Clark. Never had Moroccan before and almost everyone in the family enjoyed it (rather unadventurous in laws not too impressed, but they're steak and potatoes types). BYOB and cash only.

Lincoln Park Zoo with our niece
My wife went, but I didn't. They had a good time and especially enjoyed seeing the gorillas up close.

Hancock Center
Great views. Everyone enjoyed this, even my wife who I had to coax onto the elevator when she suddenly surprised me with a never before evidenced fear of heights.

Dinner (ribs) at Twin Anchors
Didn't make it. Disappointed about that, but we had fun anyway. Some family came to town to go to Sunday's game with us, and stuck around for dinner. We didn't feel like traveling to Twin Anchors, so we decided to walk over to the Southport area and find a casual place to eat. Ended up eating burgers/sandwhiches on the sidewalk patio at Southport Lanes. It was a very pleasant evening after a rain storm passed, and it was a wonderful end to the weekend. Some of us bowled a couple games and drank beer afterwards which was a blast since this is an old school bowling alley with pinboys setting your pins rather than automated lanes. Adds a whole new dimension to bowling which we all enjoyed. The interaction with the pinboys was cool and we all really enjoyed this bar and grill/pool hall/bowling alley in a cool old building (used to be a brothel).

Spa afternoon for the ladies
They really enjoyed Fuga Spa on Southport. Owned by an Italian and has a nice vibe, per my wife, with wine and small sandwiches provided with the treatments. Fairly pricey, but the ladies had a great afternoon.

Some live music, not sure where yet. Any suggestions? Must allow 18+ since my son is with us and I'm not ditching him.
Didn't really get to see any. Since we had a little kid with us, and my son couldn't get into most places because they carded, we ended up spending most evenings drinking Old Style on the front porch and watching the world go by or out in the very nice back yard. It was pretty darn fun, actually.

Lots of beer, brats, Chicago dogs and Italian Beefs
Din't have any brats, but had lots of dogs and an italian Beef. As good as I remember them. Wish I could get them here in Midland.

I would be fine with making this an annual pilgrimage. You could trip to Chicago for a week each year for the next 20 years and not begin to run out of cool new places to eat, drink and explore.

I'll be happy to answer any questions from those who haven't made it to Chicago yet.

Midtexhorn, my wife & I are going to Chicago after work tomorrow flying back Saturday night. This will be my 1st time; I am pumped. My wife has been. We are staying at The Drake for 3 nights.

We are doing our itinerary at this time....

Wednesday night:
• Flying on AA landing at O'Hare at 7:55pm. We plan on taking the El to downtown and maybe a cab from there to our hotel.
• I bet we get to our hotel around 9:30-10pm.
• After check-in, it is going to be late and we won't have eaten yet. Our hotel is off Walton & North Michigan Ave. Any recommendations on places that we might be able to eat there around 10:30 (ie, late night eating) that is close?

Thursday:
• Breakfast maybe at our hotel.
• Going to a Cubs/Cards game which starts at 1:20pm but we want to make it to Wriggleyville early. So right after breakfast heading there. Any bars you recommend near the stadium? I have been told that Braccis by the stadium has good (non-Chicago style) pizza. Thoughts?
• Game ends around 3:30pm.
• I guess I need to sober up  but then head to maybe Hancock or some of the museums.
• Dinner at Gino East.

Friday
• Hope to check out the beach some.
• Some of what we didn’t do Thursday like maybe the Chicago Art Institute.
• Going to watch “Wicked” that night. My wife read the book and is dying to go. I would prefer not to but then again she is going to a Cubs game with me…. Apparently it is only showing in Chicago, did a quick tour and was sold out everywhere. Already have tickets. Ford Performing Arts Center.

Saturday:
• Tricky. We have to check out of our hotel since our flight home is at 9:25pm. So we can put our bags at the front desk and start the day.
• Walk up and down the Magnificent Mile (wife). We have basically all day. So this needs to fill out some.

I am reading a travel guide book on Chicago….. I need to do some more reading tonight and on our flight.

Any cafes you guys recommend? Any breakfast stops? Any brewpubs for dinner/lunch?

Love Chicago. Wife is from there and it was a regular pilgrammage to her folks when they were kicking.

Beside Wrigley, pizza, dogs, the lake, the museums, etc, one of my never-miss places was Bob Chins, where for a not small sum you can get a huge number of king crab legs and a pitcher of mai tais. Its in the inland suburbs, way out Milwaukee Ave.

Chicago, DC, NY lost out to Alaska in the early Sept vacation debate. We'll get to it next year or two.

Just got back late last night. Had a blast. This is what we ended up doing...

Wednesday:
* Left Wednesday night. Flight was delayed of course. Took the Blue Line from O'Hare to Clark exit.
* Took a cab from Clark to Giodorano's (sp?) off Superior and Rush (link). Got there about an hour before they closed (fortunately they close at 11:30). Got a supreme stuffed pizza. Great stuff. We couldn't finish it. Great stuff.
* Checked into the Drake. Gorgeous hotel.

Thursday:
* Got up a bit late due to late night and traveling. Got some coffee and then walked to the Red Line at Chicago & State. Took the Red Line to Addison. About 15 minute ride. Full of Cubs fans.
* Walked over to Murphys (link) and hung out there about an hour or so. Had a dog and some Old Style beer. They love their Old Style, Pabst Blue Ribbon and Bud in Chicago.
* About an hour before the game started headed out to find some tickets and found them immediately. Face value, about 15-20 rows behind home plate. Went into Wrigley about 45 minutes early. Super old stadium; oldest in NL. But you can tell it is old; they need to do some renovations at some point but it has great charm.
* By 1st pitch, the stadium was full which amazed me that they can get 40,000+ people to go to a game at 1pm on a Thursday.
* Got a few beers at the stadium but didn't eat. Once again, Bud or Old Style.
* Cubs won the game over the Reds. They played that song that I had never heard before after the win and it lasts about 10 minutes it seems but the fans love it. Still in my head, very catchy.
* After the game, we walked to Clark Street and headed towards some of the bars in Wrigleyville. Went to Ivy on Clark, I believe. They must have had some happy hour specials b/c it was $1 12oz of Miller Lite. Nice.
* Hung out there for a bit and then went to Sheffield Beer Garten (link) a few blocks from Wrigleyville at Sheffield & School. A friend of mine recommended it to me. Awesome place. Cool beer garten, reminds me of Scholz outside but Scholz is about 10x bigger. But still a really cool place to go. Had some Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap there and some Sam Adams. We talked to some guys who went to the game; split White Sox and Cubs fans. Surprised me that the White Sox fans hate the Cubs. They told me that they would rather root for the Yankees or Indians or Tigers (AL rivals) over the Cubs. Wow. Regardless, my favorite bar of the trip.
* Walked back to the Addison street Red Line. Took that back to our hotel.
* We had a 9pm dinner reservation at the Chicago Chop House (link). A friend of mine recommended it highly so we wanted to do one nice dinner there. Wow. It was the best steak I have ever had. I had their special which is prime rib bone-in ribeye. They do it a special way; it's not even on their online menu. They have it in another menu. My wife had the 10oz filet mignon. Amazing. We got a bottle of wine as well. This trip was for our 2 year anniversary and in 2 years marriage and dating 5 years before that... this was easily the best meal that we have had. I don't eat at steak houses normally; only been to Ruth Chris in Austin once and Flemmings once. But Chicago Chop House was easily better than either of those IMHO.

Friday:
* This was our sight-seeing day. We walked from our hotel to the Oak Street beach entry at Lake Michigan. They had a big air show that was going on that was neat. Gorgeous day too. We walked along the beach (they had trails for bikes and runners) south almost getting to Navy Pier before heading back towards North Michigan Ave. Then walked west to where we ate lunch at Portillos.
* Portillos (link) is off Ontario west of NMA. A friend of mine recommended their hot dogs so we tried it out. Great hot dogs and cheap, you order and they call your number. Bigger place than I thought it would be. But great dog with relish, onions and poppy seed bun. And cheap.
* Then we headed south towards the Chicago River and downtown. I'm not going to say all the buildings we saw but let's just say we walked the entire downtown core. From Sears to Chicago Art Institute to the Cultural Center to the new library. We probably walked 15+ miles from 11am to 5pm. Only stopping once at a cafe in one of the buildings for some water can coffee. And then walked back up MIchigan Ave. over the bridge and back to near our hotel.
* We were going to go to the Hancock Building observation deck but it was already almost 5pm and we were beat and hungry. So we went to Gino's East on Ontario just east of NMA (link).
* Had their stuffed pizza (wife couldn't eat any more pizza). But I had been told that both were the best so I wanted to compare. And when in Rome.... personally I give Gino's the nod. The crust was much better than Giordanos.
* After dinner we went back to our hotel for some rest and then got ready for Wicked. My wife read the book and really wanted to go so I bought us tickets for the musical. It was showing at the Ford Performing Arts Center in the Oriental Theater downtown. Gorgeous theater. Very old, renovated a few times. Great show but musicals aren't my thing.
* We took a cab there but walked back to our hotel to see Chicago downtown at night. Then went to our hotel bar for a few drinks before calling it a night.

Saturday:
* This was 100% for my wife. We got up at 9:30 and packed up by 11am. We checked out of the hotel in the morning because our flight was at 9:30pm back home non-stop. Checked our bags in with the front desk and shopping time.
* Like I said, this was for my wife. I'm not a shopper. But we walked up and down NMA all day. She went to a ton of stores. I did some shopping at the Gap and Banana Republic but didn't buy anything. The rest was me walking up and down with her and going to stores. I can't complain b/c she did everything I wanted to do. I did take a 45min-1 hour break and went to the ESPN Zone and had a beer or two while watching some baseball at the bar.
* Then around 6:30, we got our bags, took a cab to the Blue Line at Clark and took that back to O'Hare (about 45min ride). Of course our flight was 30min delayed so we landed around 12:30am....

So that was the trip. All and all, a blast. My first time to Chicago. If or when I go again, I definitely want to do another Cubs game and go to Murphys before and Sheffields after. I also want to do the Hancock observation deck and spend a few hours in the Chicago Art Institute. We had a chance to go inside a few of the gorgeous buildings but didn't get a chance to go inside any of the museums. Glad we came back Saturday night though; saved a night of hotel plus gives us all day Sunday to get back to normal and get ready for the week. Plus if we stayed Saturday night, we would have done not much more than we did and catch an early morning flight back home.

Next time..............

Allsome! Love Chicago. Going twice next year, so we'll check out some of the restaurants/bars you mentioned that we haven't been to before. Thanks for the report and the info.
