Average seed

So I know this means absolutely nothing, but considering the success we've had since the Final Four appearance since 2003, I was curious what our average seed has been from 2003-2008 and how it stacks up against some of the elite in the NCAA (who have made the tournament every year during that span). Here's what I came up with (avg. seed in parenthesis)

1) Duke (2.3)
2) Kansas (2.5)
3) Texas (3.3)
4) Pittsburgh (4.3)
5) Kentucky (5.2)
5) Wisconsin (5.2)
7) Gonzaga (5.7)
8) Michigan St. (6.5)
8) Arizona (6.5)

Please note that the above may not include every team that made the tournament each year since 2003. I did some some quick searching but was unable to find such a list, although I did determine that the following teams missed the tournament at least once from 2003-2008: Florida, North Carolina, Stanford, Illinois, Memphis, UCLA, Connecticut.

I also went ahead and looked at what our average seed has been since Barnes arrived at UT in 1998-1999. Since that time, only 8 teams have made the tournament each year (10 straight appearances):

1) Duke (1.8)
2) Kansas (3.4)
3) Texas (4.4)
4) Kentucky (4.5)
5) Arizona (4.9)
6) Michigan St. (5.2)
7) Wisconsin (5.8)
8) Gonzaga (7.2)

I, for one, could not be happier having Rick Barnes lead this program for the past 10 years and here's to finishing what the 2003 team fell just shy of

We've been to at least the sweet 16 four times during that time span. I'm sure that ranks fairly high among the teams that have been to the NCAA the past 10 years.

the list of schools that have made the sweet 16 4 times in the last 10 years is not that large and realistically most teams that make the sweet 16 dont have the type of talent to win it all. I liken what Barnes is doing here to what Lute Olson did in Arizona. Their tourny resume for the first ten years is very similar. Lute didnt win a championship at Arizona til his 14th season, but he did make a couple of final fours, and the whole time he was building up their recruiting. Barnes is following the same path. Very few of the earlier Barnes teams really had championship level talent, but they had some nice runs. But every year more and more big time recruits are looking at Austin, and the future will only get better. Hell this years team has potential.

Awesome. I have wondered stuff like this before but never did the math so thank you. Can y'all imagine where we would be on that list if we were like aggy, a basketball school?

There really is no other coach I would rather have than Rick Barnes. Academics, production on the court, guys in the NBA doing well, respected by the media and other coaches...we are lucky. I love hearing him constantly echo how he hopes or plans to retire at Texas. We could be so lucky.
